Softball Soundly Secures Series With 6-1, 8-1 Wins Over Eckerd

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle softball team locked up its fifth-straight season with a 6-1, 8-1 doubleheader sweep of Eckerd on Friday at Radiology Associates Field. It also confirmed the Eagles (32-19, 15-14 Sunshine State Conference) will finish at or above .500 in conference play, a mark the program has hit every year in its history.

The pair of wins can be attributed to a well-rounded effort as the bats produced 14 runs and 13 hits, the pitching allowed only two runs, and the fielding was credited with just a single error over 14 innings.

Embry-Riddle improved to 20-3 all-time against the Tritons and 11-0 at home.

GAME 1 | Embry-Riddle - 6, Eckerd - 1

A quiet first inning came and went quickly, but Eckerd (13-31, 7-22 SSC) threatened in the second when it loaded the bases. Thankfully, Mia Macchia chased down a fly ball in left to keep the contest tied.

However, the Tritons broke into the scoring column first in the third with a leadoff double followed by a single.

The Eagles got their first hit of the game in the fourth when Delaney Morgan singled to second. After she advanced to second, Emma Wood came up clutch with a single up the middle to score the tying run.

Embry-Riddle then surged ahead in the fifth with five runs, all of which were with two outs, on six hits. Raissa Bianco, Shelby Morse, Karina Ortiz-Munoz, and Wood each produced RBI hits to give the Blue and Gold a 6-1 advantage.

Starting pitcher Morse maintained the lead and slammed the door shut in the seventh by striking out the last two batters to collect the series-opening win.

Morgan scored twice and produced two hits in three at-bats, and Wood went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Morse (W, 17-7) bumped her win streak up to nine with her fifth-straight complete game. It also moved the Napa, California native into sole possession of third on the program's single-season wins list. The sophomore allowed just one run on seven hits with five strikeouts.

GAME 2 | Embry-Riddle - 8, Eckerd - 1

The Tritons pushed a runner into scoring position in two of the first three innings, but the left side of the infield ended both threats as shortstop Kerry O'Sullivan and third baseman Ashton Aycock stopped a couple of ground balls to end the first and third innings with force outs at third.

That gave the Eagles' offense enough time to wake up and eventually start the scoring in the bottom of the third when Bianco doubled to right center to drive in pinch runner Leah Oberkehr.

From there, pitcher Mallory Kinahan and the ERAU defense locked in to retire six straight batters over the fourth and fifth innings.

The floodgates opened in the bottom of the fifth. Bianco smacked her second double of the game to left to plate a pair of Eagles. Then with the bases loaded, Ortiz-Munoz cleared the bases with a single up the middle to make it a 6-0 contest.

Eckerd got a run back in the sixth with a single and an RBI double, but the Eagles increased their lead to 8-1 in the bottom of the inning when a fielding error by the Triton's pitcher allowed two more runners to come home.

Bianco picked up her team-leading 12th multi-hit game of the season after going 2-for-4 with a run and a career-high three RBIs. Ortiz-Munoz grabbed a couple of RBIs with one hit for 56 RBIs in her career to enter the top-10 on the program's all-time list. Aycock scored twice while producing one hit in two at-bats.

Kinahan (W, 8-9) got back into the win column with a solid six-inning performance. She gave up just one run on five hits. Ava Domenici sealed the victory by retiring all three batters she faced in the seventh.

In the field, Ortiz-Munoz accumulated 16 putouts on the day for 326 in her career, which is now the second-most by an Eagle in the history of the program. O'Sullivan tallied seven assists to move into a tie for second on the program's single-season assists list.

The series and the 2024 season concludes on Saturday with Senior Day beginning at 12 p.m. Seniors Lauren Latoria, Macchia, and Ortiz-Munoz will be honored before the game.
