Volleyball Takes Two on Final Day of Flagler Saints Classic

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle volleyball team closed out the Flagler Saints Classic with a pair of sweeps on Saturday, beating Belmont Abbey and Trevecca Nazarene in straight sets. The Eagles recorded their highest single-match hit percentage as a team (.422) since 2021 against the Crusaders and then set a season-high mark in aces (10) versus the Trojans.

It was the program's first-ever meeting with Belmont Abbey and its second bout with Trevecca Nazarene, with the first occurring back in 2015.

Embry-Riddle - 3, Belmont Abbey - 0

Embry-Riddle was behind 3-1 to start the first set, but then the Eagles scored four-consecutive points to take a 5-3 lead. Down 12-11, ERAU mustered another four-point run to go up 15-12, but Belmont Abbey battled back to even the set at 16-16. From there, Isabella Rujano tallied the next three scores for her team with successful kills, and the Blue and Gold maintained the lead from there on out to win 25-20. The stats were fairly even on both sides as each team hit .313. However, the last two sets were dominated by ERAU.

The Eagles tripled the score of the Crusaders at 15-5 in the second set. Dana Gibbons pounded a trio of spikes to the court during that span, and Rujano tallied three-consecutive aces. Embry-Riddle cruised to a 25-9 set win. It was a lopsided set as ERAU hit an astounding .542 with 15 kills to Belmont Abbey's -.037 with just five kills.

Set three was more of the same. Three straight attacking errors sent ERAU on a 4-0 run early on to claim a 7-3 advantage. That lead only continued to grow until maxing out at 11 with a 24-13 score. Rujano then secured the match-clinching point. It was another efficient set as Embry-Riddle had a .444 hit percentage with just one attacking error.

For the fifth-straight game, Rujano led the attack with 14 kills, a .480 hit percentage, 7 digs, and a career-high three aces, capping her double-double streak at four matches. Ashlyn Koerner contributed 23 assists and five digs, Gabriela Pagan accumulated seven digs, and Haley Manjack and Ruby Owen tied for the team lead in blocks with four.

Aside from the vast difference in hit percentage, as the Eagles held the Crusaders to .131 on the attack, ERAU also had a 9-1 advantage in aces.

Embry-Riddle - 3, Trevecca Nazarene - 0

The aces kept coming against Trevecca Nazarene as Embry-Riddle registered five in the first set. With the score at 10-10, ERAU took control with an 8-2 streak. Jaden McBride added four kills over the Eagles' last seven points for the 25-15 win.

The Blue and Gold faced a large hole to start set two down 6-1. ERAU surged back to tie the set at 13-13 when Rujano tallied three straight kills to make it a 16-13 contest. Later on, the Trojans leveled the points at 20 each but then produced three consecutive errors to make the score 23-20 in favor of ERAU. However, Trevecca Nazarene scored four in a row for a set point opportunity at 24-23. Kills from Owen and Rujano then gave Embry-Riddle the chance to go up two sets to none, which they did when Owen tipped the overpass on the serve reception down to the Trojans' side of the court.

Koerner set the tone in set three with back-to-back aces to begin. Up 9-8, the Eagles used kills from five different members to go on a 9-2 spurt to lead comfortably at 18-10 and later complete the sweep by taking set three 25-15.

Again, the Eagles outserved the competition, this time 10-2 in the ace column led by three from Pagan, which matched her career high. McBride produced her second double-double of the season on 13 kills and 10 digs with two aces. Rujano chipped in 10 kills, five digs and two blocks. Pagan dug out seven spikes while Koerner and Hage shared setting duties with 18 and 13 assists.

The Eagles' non-conference slate concludes next weekend with a trio of contests at the Lee Invitational. The action begins on Friday, Sept. 20 against RV Quincy at 9 a.m. followed by a meeting with North Greenville at 4:30 p.m.
