Women’s Soccer Downs Edward Waters 6-1

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's soccer team notched its second win in a row with a 6-1 defeat of Edward Waters, Saturday at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. The Eagles got a goal and two assists from Berglind Thrastardottir, a brace from Lauryn Mateo and two assists from Jessica Meno to improve to 4-2 on the year. The Tigers fall to 2-4 with the loss.

The first shot of the game came from an Edward Waters boot, but it was the Eagles who recorded the first goal of the evening. In the 21st minute, the Eagles won a throw-in deep in the Tigers' half of the field. Inga Agustsdottir threw the ball in to Mateo and the sophomore was brought down as she spun into the box. Mateo buried the first penalty kick of her career to put the Eagles up 1-0.

Less than 10 minutes later, the Tigers answered when Rose-Bertu Rosinvil scored following a corner kick.

The goal seemed to give the Tigers confidence as their third shot of the game forced a save by Oona Jokinen, but in a first half of characterized by end-to-end action, it was the Eagles who scored the next goal as an unmarked Mateo finished a pass from Meno to give the Blue and Gold a 2-1 advantage at the intermission.

The second 45 minutes featured four goals by four different Eagle players. Thrastardottir was involved in the first three goals of the frame, starting with a cross from the right side that was tapped in by Ida Zetterberg in the 53rd minute. Nine minutes later, Thrastardottir got on to the end of a cross into the box and got the ball to Grace Foyer with her first touch. In one motion, Foyer turned to face the goal and hit a first-touch volley past the Tiger goalie to extend the lead to 3-1.

With just under 18 minutes remaining, Thrastardottir got into the scoring column herself. Trailing the play, the sophomore put herself in position to knock in a cross from Anna Marissa Lara, and Ida Kummel helped Meno earn her second assist of the game with a goal at the 81:50 mark.

The Eagles open Sunshine State Conference play on Wednesday when they host 10th-ranked Tampa at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium.
