Volleyball Flies Past Tars, 3-0

WINTER PARK, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle volleyball team needed just three sets to dispatch Rollins on Saturday, which was the program's seventh sweep of the season. Entering with the 18th-highest team hit percentage (.263) in NCAA II, the Eagles outhit the Tars .317 to .120. ERAU also ranked high in the division in blocks per set (14th, 2.7) and won the blocking battle nine to five.

The win improved Embry-Riddle's all-time record against Rollins to 21-5 and 11-3 on the road. It was the 12th-straight time the Eagles downed the Tars, a streak that started all the way back in 2017.

Fresh off a 25-kill, 23-dig, and five-ace performance on Friday, Isabella Rujano led the charge against the Tars, earning two kills and a block assist early in set one to send ERAU on a four-point run (4-1). The Eagles continued their season-long stout defensive play as three of the team's first seven points occurred from blocks. Dana Gibbons was also a major contributor early in set one. The junior had three kills in a six-rally span to keep the Blue and Gold ahead 10-5.

However, Rollins went on a four-point streak to get within one (10-9). ERAU was able to keep its distance before forming a four-point run on the back of two-consecutive kills by Gibbons to lead 21-15 and eventually win the set 25-19. It was an efficient start for Gibbons, who was a perfect five-for-five in attacks. A whopping 20 of the Eagles' 25 points in the set came from kills.

Again, the Tars took the opening point in set two, and again Embry-Riddle strung together a scoring streak immediately after. Jaden McBride picked up two aces and a kill during the 7-0 run, which forced a Rollins timeout. That stoppage paid off for the home team as the Tars then collected six of the next seven points to make it a one-point set (8-7). Embry-Riddle earned some more breathing room with four unanswered scores to bring the lead up to five (12-7). The Eagles maintained a lead of at least three points the rest of the way, ending the set on a 6-1 stretch to win 25-16.

Set three was the closest of the match, and this time the Eagles took the first point. The two sides went back and forth until ERAU used two blocks from McBride and Gibbons to ride a four-point spurt to lead 8-5. Rollins later answered with four-straight points of its own to go ahead 10-9. Neither side was willing to give an inch, but two consecutive blocking errors by the Tars allowed the Blue and Gold to take a 20-17 advantage. The Eagles stayed ahead by two or more for the remainder of the set to win 25-21.

Rujano led the charge offensively with 14 kills and fell just short of another double-double due to nine digs. McBride added 11 kills and seven digs. Gibbons tied her season high in kills with eight, connecting on all eight of her attacks for a perfect hit percentage. The Titusville, Florida native also notched four blocks. Ashlyn Koerner ended with 20 assists and five digs while Lexie Hage added 17 assists and four digs. Gabriela Pagan was the only Eagle to reach double figures in digs with 12 while Haley Manjack led in blocks with five.

The Eagles are back at home on Tuesday, Oct. 1 to welcome RV Nova Southeastern to town for a match at 7 p.m.
