Volleyball Hangs on to Secure Thrilling Victory Over Saints

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - In a battle between the last two undefeated teams at the Bahama House Classic, the Embry-Riddle volleyball team hung on to beat Flagler 20-18 in a decisive fifth set on Saturday to become the de facto champion of the round-robin tournament. It lengthed the Eagles' (3-0) winning streak to seven over the Saints (2-1), which began back in 2014.

Flagler possessed the hot hand early on, taking a 5-2 lead to begin the first set. From there, the Eagles outscored the Saints 13-3 to a 15-8 advantage with a third of those points coming from Isabella Rujano kills. A pair of attacking errors by the visitors secured the opening set for the home team with ease, 25-13. It was a dominating first set as ERAU hit a whopping .536 and held Flagler to a .080 hit percentage.

Neither team could break away by more than three points in the second set until Embry-Riddle rattled off four straight scores to go up 19-13. The Eagles kept their distance to secure a 25-20 set victory.

With the chance to close the game out in the third, the score sat tied at 16 when Flagler tallied six unanswered points with a trio of aces to take a 22-16 lead and eventually a 25-20 set win.

Flagler used another scoring streak, this time an 8-1 run, to vault ahead 13-7 in the fourth set. However, the Eagles fought back to take the lead at 21-19. Unfortunately, the Saints used a 4-0 spurt to once again go ahead 23-21, which held up to be a 25-23 set four final.

The squads traded blows in the fifth, but Flagler edged ahead 12-9. Rujano sent a couple of massive spikes to the ground on Flagler's side of the court to aid the Eagles to a 14-13 advantage and a chance to earn the match-winning point. Flagler scored a pair of points to then be in winning position, but then ERAU did the same with two straight kills by Rujano. Again, Flagler responded with a pair of points. Rujano again earned a kill to level the score at 17-17, but a serving error put Flagler back into a position to steal the match. Thankfully, Jaden McBride registered a clutch kill to tie the match, and two Flagler attacking errors sealed the contest for the home team.

McBride had an excellent all-around performance, picking up 17 kills, 21 digs, which was just one shy of tying her career high, and two block assists. Rujano racked up a career-high 21 kills to pair with 11 digs for her third double-double this season.

Fifi Harvey also performed well, picking up nine kills, six digs, and four block assists. Fellow freshman Ashlyn Koerner earned her first collegiate double-double with 26 assists and 13 digs. Lexie Hage added 24 assists. Gabriela Pagan contributed 15 digs, and Haley Manjack led in block assists with six.

The Eagles will visit Flagler's home court next weekend for the Flagler Saints Classic from Sept. 13-14. The action begins with a match against No. 23 Central Oklahoma on Friday, Sept. 13 at 3 p.m.
