Volleyball Falls to No. 3 Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - Embry-Riddle Volleyball was looking for its second-consecutive top-10 upset, but the Eagles came up short to No. 3 Barry, falling 3-0 on Saturday. Entering the match, the Buccaneers appeared to be a formidable opponent as Barry possessed the best hit percentage (.314) in the Sunshine State Conference as well as the most points (18.6), blocks (2.6) and aces (2.4) per set in the league.

RECORDS
Embry-Riddle - 11-5 (4-2 SSC | T-4th)

ALL-TIME SERIES
  • Barry leads the all-time series 12-7
  • The Eagles are 3-7 at Barry
  • Last year was the first time the two teams split the season series, with each squad earning a win at home in straight sets
  • Nine of the previous 10 contests have been sweeps

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • Dakota Zieman grabbed the Eagles' first two points as Embry-Riddle went toe-to-toe with Barry early on looking for its second-straight top-10 upset
  • Back-to-back rejections had the Buccaneers up 6-3, but the Eagles managed to eventually tie the set 10-10
  • Soon after, Isabella Rujano produced a pair of kills to give Embry-Riddle its first lead of the set, 13-12
  • However, a 4-0 streak with a couple of blocks lifted Barry ahead 18-15
  • Embry-Riddle did get back within one, 21-20, but the home team took the last four points with three consecutive kills from Valeriya Kozlova
Second Set
  • Barry jumped ahead 5-2 when the Eagles answered with two-straight successful spikes from Stella Weisbrod to cap off four unanswered points to go up 6-5
  • The Buccaneers then used runs of 5-1, 3-0 and 4-0 to push ERAU behind by five (18-13)
  • Embry-Riddle did have a couple of 3-0 streaks in there, which brought the visitors back within two at 18-16
  • Barry held on, though, to win the set 25-19
Third Set
  • Ashlyn Koerner was involved in a block assist and an ace to aid ERAU out to a 3-1 lead
  • A 5-1 spurt later in the set pushed the lead to three (9-6)
  • At that point, the Buccaneers strung together five points in a row partially due to four Embry-Riddle miscues to retake the lead 11-9
  • Errant serving allowed Embry-Riddle to stay close in the set as Barry produced four service errors from that point until the score was level at 17-17
  • However, two-straight blocks assisted the Buccaneers on a 4-0 run to move ahead 21-17
  • The Eagles fought back immediately with Koerner registering a kill and a block to send ERAU on a 3-0 streak to get within one point (21-20)
  • Despite this, Barry closed out the set by taking four of the last five rallies
