Eagles Settle for 1-1 Draw After Last-Second Goal

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – #22 Embry-Riddle Women's Soccer kept their unbeaten streak alive on Wednesday, but were denied a win after Palm Beach Atlantic scored a goal with 0.5 seconds remaining. As has become the norm this season, the Eagles got off to a quick start against PBA, seeing Anna Marisa Lara score her fourth goal of the season in just the 9th minute.

RECORDS
#22 Embry-Riddle - 5-0-5 (3-0-3)
Palm Beach Atlantic -  2-5-5 (1-2-3)

ALL-TIME SERIES
  • Embry-Riddle now leads the all-time series 13-8-1.
  • This was the first ever draw between the Eagles and the Sailfish.
  • Prior to tonight, ERAU had won five consecutive meetings against PBA, outscoring them 13-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles' lone goal began with a throw-in on the right side of the field. Kaitlyn Kogl created space to deliver a cross from the corner flag, and Lauryn Mateo ultimately laid it off for Lara, who fired her shot into the roof of the net.
  • Shortly after the goal, PBA was forced into a change of goalkeepers due to injury. Keira Dawley came in and made four saves while playing the final 78 minutes.
  • Dawley was immediately called into action, making a pair of saves to deny Lara from doubling the Eagles' lead.
  • ERAU outshot PBA 7-4 in the opening half, with the second half seeing much more action. The Blue and Gold outshot the Sailfish 8-7 in the second half.
  • After a pair of early saves in the 55th minute from Stella Roane, Embry-Riddle had done a great job of managing the game. Palm Beach Atlantic did not manage another shot on target for over 30 minutes.
  • However, in the final seconds of the match, a PBA through ball was miscontrolled by the Eagles, and Madeleine Hulme found herself one-on-one with Roane. Hulme managed to score with 0.5 seconds left, breaking the hearts of the Eagles and seeing the game end in a 1-1 draw.
INSIDE THE STATS
  • Ten of Embry-Riddle's 14 goals this season have been scored in the first half of a match.
  • Lara registered 6 shots in the game tonight, a season-high for an ERAU player this season.
  • Roane remains undefeated in her Embry-Riddle career, with a 6-0-5 record, and is the only player to play every minute of this season.
  • The five draws for the Blue and Gold are tied for the most draws in program history (2022).
  • The Eagles are tied for 1st place in the SSC with four games left to play. Both ERAU and Nova Southeastern are currently 3-0-3.
UP NEXT
Embry-Riddle's next contest will be a non-conference matchup when they travel to Cleveland, Tennessee to take on Lee University. That game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, Oct. 18. The Flames are currently 7-2-2 and have a perfect 5-0 record at home this year.
