Volleyball Overwhelms Saint Leo in Convincing Sweep

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - It was complete domination by the Embry-Riddle Volleyball team on Friday night as the Eagles swept Saint Leo by set scores of 25-10, 25-12 and 25-8. Embry-Riddle controlled all facets of the match, recording significantly more kills (41-14), aces (10-1), blocks (9-2), and digs (53-40) than the Lions. 

The Eagles held SLU to a -.044 hit percentage, which turned out to be the lowest mark for a team facing Embry-Riddle since 2021 and the lowest percentage by SSC opposition since the program joined the conference in 2017. On the opposite end, the Eagles were extremely efficient on the attack. The home team posted a hit percentage of .351 as four Eagles hit over .400, including Isabella Rujano (.650), Dakota Zieman (.471), Stella Weisbrod (.462) and Olivia Hartmann (.400).

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • Set one was dominated by Embry-Riddle from the start as the Eagles took the first five points 
  • A 6-0 run later on increased the lead to 13-3
  • Up 15-7, Zieman locked in and produced three kills over the Eagles' next six points (21-8)
  • The Eagles closed out the set with an ace from Gabriela Pagan, 25-10
  • Both Rujano and Zieman recorded the same amount of kills individually (5) as Saint Leo did as a team in the set
  • Additionally, Embry-Riddle held the Lions to a -.097 hit percentage
Second Set
  • Just like set one, set two was all Eagles from the start as the Blue and Gold took command, jumping ahead 7-1 and later 13-3 highlighted by a trio of kills from both Weisbrod and Rujano as well as two aces from Zieman
  • The Lions then went on a 4-1 spurt to get within seven (14-7)
  • However, the home team finished out the set on a 6-1 streak to win 25-12 with three of the final four points coming from Weisbrod kills
Third Set
  • Hartmann earned the set start, and she delivered with a pair of early kills to aid the Blue and Gold out to a 9-1 lead 
  • Later on, Fifi Harvey produced back-to-back aces to cap off a 4-0 run that increased Embry-Riddle's lead to 19-6
  • The advantage only continued to grow as the Eagles grabbed the final five tallies to earn the team's eighth sweep of the season with a 25-8 third set win

INSIDE THE STATS
  • Saint Leo entered the contest averaging 2.3 aces per set, which was the second best mark in the conference, but the Eagles received serves well and limited the visitors to just a single ace, which was a season low for the Lions
  • Embry-Riddle held Saint Leo to a -.044 hit percentage, which is a program low for the Lions since at least 2015
  • It's the lowest opponent hit percentage for ERAU this season and the second time the Eagles kept the opposition in the negative
