Resilient Volleyball Had No. 2 Barry On-Edge In Record-Setting Homecoming Match

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Stop us if you've heard this one before, but Friday night featured yet another intense and entertaining five-set match involving Embry-Riddle Volleyball inside the ICI Center. The Eagles were eyeing their second win over a top-10 opponent on the season as No. 2 Barry traveled to Daytona Beach. A record number of eyes were spectating the match as 1,195 supporters were in attendance for the Homecoming weekend contest, which was a single-match program record and the 10th-most in an NCAA II match in 2025.

The Eagles knew they would have their hands full facing freshman phenom Valeriya Kozlova, a 6-foot-11-inch middle/outside hitter who leads the Sunshine State Conference in points per set (5.3).

Embry-Riddle had the Buccaneers on the ropes on multiple occasions, leading 20-19 up two sets to one and then 15-14 in the fifth set. However, it was Barry who emerged victorious in the decisive set, 17-15.

RECORDS
Embry-Riddle - 14-10, 7-7 SSC (7th)
No. 2 Barry - 19-3, 12-3 SSC (2nd)

  • Nine of the previous 11 contests have been sweeps
  • This was the first five-set match between these two teams since 2016

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • Barry opened the match with a 5-1 run, but the Eagles responded with a couple of kills from Isabella Rujano to get within one (6-5)
  • Later down 11-7, Embry-Riddle strung together six-straight points, including back-to-back aces from Stella Weisbrod, to jump ahead 13-11
  • Kills from five different Eagles allowed the Blue and Gold to pull ahead by two (20-18)
  • Embry-Riddle ended the set with two successful spikes from Dakota Zieman to swipe the first set, 25-22
  • The Eagles were efficient in the opening set, hitting .359 as a team
Second Set
  • Barry's top attacker, Kozlova, took control of the set by capturing the Buccaneer's first four points as Embry-Riddle trailed 5-3
  • The visitors composed three-point and four-point streaks to increase ERAU's deficit to 15-10
  • Rujano tallied two-straight kills to get the Eagles within three (18-15), but Barry grabbed seven of the final nine points to even the match at one set each with a 25-17 set win
Third Set
  • The home side was hot, flying out to a 4-2 lead that later became an 8-4 advantage, partly due to five Barry miscues
  • The Buccaneers rallied with a 6-2 spurt out of a timeout to level the score at 10-10
  • ERAU built a four-point lead (18-14) before Barry took the next three rallies
  • However, the Eagles held on to the lead for the remainder of the set to win 25-22
Fourth Set
  • Set four featured 10 ties and five lead changes
  • Back-to-back blocks from Haley Manjack and Rujano ignited a thunderous roar from the crowd and capped off a 5-0 run for the Eagles that erased Barry's four point lead (20-19, ERAU)
  • From there, the Buccaneers took the following four rallies to go back ahead 23-20 and send the match to a fifth set with a 25-22 win
Fifth Set
  • Kozlova was a threat for the Eagles as she pushed Barry ahead 8-4 with four kills and a block
  • However, ERAU used a serving error from the visitors and two-straight aces by Zieman to get within one (8-7)
  • The Eagles managed to tie it on a Rujano kill, but Barry took four of the next five tallies for a potential match point at 14-11
  • Embry-Riddle fought off three match points in a row with a Buccaneer blocking error and a long attack from Kozlova tying the set at 14-14
  • A fourth consecutive tally was added with a rejection by Manjack and Zieman to turn the tables and give the Eagles a serve for set point at 15-14
  • Barry continued to set Kozlova, who tied the match and put the Buccaneers back ahead with topspin-heavy serve
  • Another Barry kill was the dagger as Embry-Riddle came up short in its attempt to earn a second top-10 win of the season

  • Ashlyn Koerner picked up her 11th double-double of the season with 38 assists and 11 digs
