Turpening Hits Career High in Women’s Basketball’s Victory Over West Florida

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team won its first game of the 2025 NCAA II South Region tournament on Friday. The second-seeded Eagles fought off a fourth-quarter surge by No. 7 West Florida to top the Argonauts 70-56 advance to the second round of the tournament.
 
GAME NOTES
• The Eagles are making their third NCAA II regional tournament appearance.
• Friday's win was the Eagles' second in NCAA II regional play.
• West Florida advanced to the regional tournament for the seventh time in program history.
• The Eagles dominated the Argos 47-29 on the boards and outscored UWF 16-8 in second chance points.
Kailey Turpening scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Eagles.
Laurie Satchell earned her second career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

First Quarter
• The Eagles raced out to a 10-0 lead, prompting a UWF timeout.
• After going scoreless for nearly three minutes, the Argos got their first basket at the 7:04 mark.
• The Eagles were 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the field in the first 10 minutes, while the defense held UWF to just three made field goals.
• Heading into the second the Eagles led 19-8.
 
Second Quarter
• The Argos outscored the Eagles 14-9 in the second 10 minutes of play.
• With 5:14 left in the second quarter, the Eagle lead was 16 (27-11).
• At the 1:29 mark, Stephens hit a jumper and that basket was the first of four unanswered by the Argos who hit a three at the buzzer to cut the lead to six (28-22) at the half.
 
Third Quarter
• Early in the third, the Argos made it a four-point game, but the Eagles built the advantage back up to 15 (44-29) with 2:59 left in the period.
• A 6-2 run by West Florida to end the third made it an 11-point (46-35) game.
 
Fourth Quarter
• The Argos carried the momentum they had in the third quarter over into the fourth.
• West Florida scored the first eight points of the frame to cut the lead to three (46-43).
• At the 5:40 mark, Sarah Napoli hit one of her two threes to put the Eagles back up by six (51-45), but the Argos hit back-to-back threes of their own to tie the score with 4:25 left to play.
• West Florida had a chance to take the lead but missed back-to-back free throws and the rebound was corralled by Teterycz who converted on the other end to trigger a 10-0 Eagle run.
• West Florida was able to narrow the gap to seven points, but the Blue & Gold scored the last seven points of the game to seal the win.
• Free throws were key down the stretch as the Eagles knocked down 10 of their 14 chances, while the Argos were just 3-of-8 from the charity stripe.
 
UP NEXT
The Eagles' opponent in the next round will be a familiar foe as they go up against Nova Southeastern at 5 p.m. (CDT) on Saturday.
