Men’s Basketball Bows Out of SSC Tournament With 90-73 Loss to Tampa

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Fourth-Seeded Embry-Riddle Men's Basketball was handed an early exit to the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, losing 90-73 to No. 5-seed Tampa in the quarterfinals on Tuesday night. It was an uncharacteristic performance for one of the best rebounding teams in NCAA Division II as the Eagles lost the battle on the glass for just the fourth time this season, 44-33.

ALL-TIME SERIES
  • The series is tied 11-11.
  • The Eagles are 7-3 at home.
  • The two teams split the regular-season series with Embry-Riddle winning 96-89 in overtime in Daytona Beach on Jan. 11 while Tampa took the most recent meeting 73-70 on Feb. 15.
  • This was the first postseason meeting.
  • Embry-Riddle has won seven of the last 10. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
  • Both sides started cold, missing each of their first four shots.
  • Jared Berry was on fire to start, hitting his first three shots to help the Eagles reduce the deficit from seven to two points (20-18, 9:54).
  • Soon after, the Spartans connected on three straight shots from deep to send the Blue and Gold behind by double digits (31-20, 7:33).
  • The deficit grew to as much as 19 points before Michael McCalister and Clarens Pierre combined to hit three free throws. 
  • Embry-Riddle trailed 49-31 into the break.

Second Half
  • Jerry Bracey II took control on the offensive end for the home team by scoring the Eagles' first six points of the half (55-37, UT).
  • Yassin Hussein followed with two conversions from up-close.
  • Bracey II picked up his 10th point of the half just seven minutes in with back-to-back buckets from inside the paint. 
  • However, UT made five consecutive shots to make the scoring gap 22 points (69-47, 10:18).
  • Milan Skoric started to get hot from deep with two three-pointers in the span of a minute (7:18).
  • With 5:36 left, the Eagles went on a 12-3 run to shrink the gap down to 13 points (81-68).
  • The Spartans got their final nine points from the charity stripe to earn the 90-73 win.

The Eagles will now wait and see if they are one of eight teams selected to the NCAA II South Regional. The selection show is scheduled for Sunday, March 9 at 11 p.m. on NCAA.com
