Efficient Attack Aids Volleyball to Sweep of Eckerd

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - It was a successful first weekend of Sunshine State Conference play as Embry-Riddle Volleyball improved to 2-0 in league action after defeating Eckerd 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. It was the team's sixth sweep in its last seven matches.  

Embry-Riddle was accurate with its spikes, finishing with a .343 hit percentage. That was evident early on as ERAU only had one attacking error in the first set. Isabella Rujano led the way with 18 kills in just three sets, an average of six kills per set, while Ashlyn Koerner recorded 39 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
  • Embry-Riddle raced out to a 4-1 lead
  • A 5-1 run with two kills from Haley Manjack forced the Tritons to use an early timeout with the Eagles ahead 10-5
  • Later on, Eckerd scored four unanswered points to get within two (12-10)
  • However, Embry-Riddle stepped on the gas and took nine of the next 12 points with three successful spikes from Rujano to go ahead 21-13
  • EC attempted a late rally with a 4-1 spurt to make it a 22-17 set, but Dakota Zieman registered a couple kills to help the home team take the set 25-18
  • Rujano paced the Eagles with six of the team's 14 kills in the opening set and a .750 hit percentage
  • As a team, Embry-Riddle was accurate on the attack with just one attacking error and a hit percentage of .481
Second Set
  • Both sides remained close until the visitors used back-to-back rejections within a 3-0 run to go up 12-9
  • The Eagles chipped away and eventually regained the lead at 16-15 before another three-point run put Eckerd back on top 18-16
  • Shortly after, Rujano sent back-to-back spikes down to the court as the Eagles went up 21-20
  • Eckerd reached set point at 24-23, but kills from Rujano and Koerner turned the tables to give the Blue and Gold the chance to go up two sets to none
  • A mishit on the set after the serve reception allowed Embry-Riddle to take the set 26-24
Third Set
  • Eckerd had the upper hand to start the third set with a 7-3 lead
  • However, the home team responded with five-straight points due to a couple of Triton errors to lead 8-7
  • With EC ahead 11-10, four kills in a row from Zieman helped Embry-Riddle go on an 8-1 streak to jump up 18-12
  • Eckerd used a timeout to regroup and proceeded to rattle off five-straight tallies to get within one (18-17)
  • A trio of attacking errors by EC late in the set helped secure the sweep for the Blue and Gold, 25-20

INSIDE THE STATS
  • Embry-Riddle's 47 assists were tied for the most in the SSC in a three-set match this season
  • Additionally, the Eagles' 49 kills were the second most in the league in a three-set match
  • Embry-Riddle held the advantage in kills (49-39), aces (5-3), and digs (41-38)
  • With a team hit percentage of .343, it's the second-straight match the Eagles hit above .300
