Women’s Soccer Knocks Off No. 2 Columbus State in Key Road Victory

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Embry-Riddle Women's Soccer took to the pitch on Friday night to open the 2025 campaign, battling against No. 2-ranked Columbus State (Ga.) at the Walden Soccer Complex in Columbus, Ga. The Eagles (1-0) stunned the Cougars (0-1) with a pair of early goals, holding on and earning a win over a side that appeared in last season's Final Four.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Embry-Riddle found the back of the net just 94 seconds into their season through Ida Zetterberg. After intercepting a back pass, Zetterberg rounded the CSU goalkeeper and tapped into an empty net.
  • Soon after, the Eagles found the back of the net again. Lauryn Mateo headed in a cross from Olivia Gallo off a freekick, taking a two-goal lead within the first five minutes.
  • Columbus State registered the last 12 shots of the game, but could not get a shot on target until Shania Wegesand placed a shot in to the bottom corner of the Eagles' net in the 89th minute.
