No. 17 Women’s Basketball Uses Second Half Surge to Claim 79-49 Win Over Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. – No. 17 Embry-Riddle women's basketball turned a two-point halftime lead into a convincing win over Florida Southern on the road on Wednesday evening. The Eagles held a narrow lead throughout the first half, but blew the game open in the third quarter. ERAU dominated the paint all night long, outscoring the Mocs 58-10 in points in the paint, grabbing 17 more rebounds than FSC, and shooting .640 from the field as a team. Eliana Sheplee led the game with 24 points and 12 rebounds, while Kailey Turpening and Laurie Satchell each had 15 points.

GAME NOTES
  • Embry-Riddle jumped up to No. 17 in the nation in the most recent WBCA Coaches' Poll (Jan. 13).
  • Florida Southern still leads the all-time series 11-10 over the Eagles, however ERAU has now won each of the past six meetings between the teams.
  • This was the Blue and Gold's largest ever win over the Moccasins. Each of the past five wins had all been by less than 10 points.
  • Embry-Riddle is now in sole possession of 2nd place in the SSC. The Eagles are just one game behind Nova Southeastern who is 8-0 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • Florida Southern got off to a great start this afternoon, up 13-4 after forcing the Eagles into four turnovers in the first four minutes.
  • However, Embry-Riddle would hold the Mocs scoreless for the final 5:28 of the quarter. 
  • ERAU was capitalizing on their good looks from the start of the game, shooting .667 (6-for-9) in the first quarter, behind eight points and three rebounds from Eliana Sheplee.
  • Although Florida Southern outshot the Eagles 17-9, the efficiency from the Eagles combined with their eight free throws in the quarter saw them take a 19-16 lead into the second quarter.
Second Quarter
  • After a closely contested first quarter, the second was much of the same. There were five ties and four more lead changes before the half. Neither team ever lead by more than three points in the quarter.
  • All 14 points in the quarter for ERAU came from inside the paint, with Laurie Satchell responsible for six of them. The senior would go on to make each of her first seven shots of the game.
  • Back-to-back layups from Anye' Staton in the final minute of the half ensured that the Blue and Gold went into the break with a 33-31 lead.
  • Along with Embry-Riddle getting all of their shots from inside, the Eagles would disrupt the Mocs post play at the other end. Florida Southern finished the first half, 4-for-14 on layups.
Third Quarter
  • The Eagles only led for 3:22 of the first half, but they came out and dominated the entire second half. ERAU went on an 8-0 run over a two-minute span to start the third quarter, leading it 41-34.
  • Mary Lengemann would score the next six points of the game for Embry-Riddle and she would score all eight of her total points in the quarter, going 4-for-4 at the free throw line.
  • A made three from Florida Southern made it 47-45 with 3:46 left in the quarter, but the Mocs would not score again for over nine minutes.
  • Sheplee would added a pair of fastbreak buckets before the end of the quarter, giving the Eagles the largest lead of the game, at the time, 55-45.
Fourth Quarter
  • ERAU started the fourth quarter with their only attempted three of the game, and Alyssa Brasko connected to make it 58-45.
  • By the time Embry-Riddle's 23-0 run came to an end, they were up 70-45 with less than five minutes to play.
  • Sheplee had another eight points in the quarter, going a perfect 4-for-4 from the field. As a team, the Eagles shot over 73% from the field to close out the game, while holding the Mocs to 1-for-16 in the fourth.
INSIDE THE STATS
  • Anye' Staton returned for the Eagles after missing the past 11 games through injury. She finished with 12 points and six rebounds in just 12 minutes of action.
  • Eliana Sheplee has averaged 21.2 points in the five games since returning from Christmas Break, while also grabbing a season high 12 rebounds tonight.
  • Embry-Riddle is now 11-0 when they have outrebounded their opponents, winning the battle on the glass, 44-27, this afternoon.
UP NEXT
The Eagles will host Tampa on Saturday, January 17, with a 2 p.m. tipoff scheduled for Cancer Awareness Night. The Spartans will enter the contest with a 5-3 record in the SSC and a 10-7 overall record.
