No. 14 Women’s Basketball Unable to Overcome Slow Start in Loss at Eckerd

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – No. 14 Embry-Riddle women's basketball trailed by 13 at the end of the first quarter on Saturday afternoon against Eckerd and was never able to fully recover. ERAU was able to cut the Tritons' lead down to eight in the fourth quarter, but that was the closest the Eagles got in the second half, before dropping the contest 73-55. The 73 points scored by Eckerd are the most points that the Blue and Gold have given up in a game this season. Eliana Sheplee led the Eagles in scoring for the eighth consecutive game, finishing with 23 points.

  • Embry-Riddle rose three spots, up to No. 14 in the nation in the most recent WBCA Coaches' Poll (Jan. 20).
  • The Tritons now lead the all-time series 15-9 over the Eagles.
  • ERAU has a 2-9 overall record when playing on the road at Eckerd.
  • Embry-Riddle is now in a tie for 2nd place in the SSC with the Tritons. The Eagles and Eckerd are each two games behind Nova Southeastern who is 11-0 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • Eckerd had five second chance points in the opening two minutes of the game, but a pair of early buckets from Eliana Sheplee made it 5-4 with 7:30 on the clock.
  • The Tritons would rely on their defense to build up their lead, only giving up one field goal in the next five minutes, leading it 20-8 with 2:00 left to go in the quarter.
  • Anye' Staton and Sheplee finished the quarter with four points apiece, but Emma Egan and Jaylen Ostenson combined for 20 of Eckerd's 25 points in the quarter.
  • As a team, the Eagles went 5-for-13 from the field, adding an additional two points at the free throw line.
Second Quarter
  • Embry-Riddle would start the quarter on a 6-0 run, getting three consecutive buckets in the paint. The Tritons' lead was cut to nine at 28-19. 
  • Four of Eckerd's five made field goals came from behind the arc in the quarter, with Greta Carollo hitting three of them off of the bench, totalling 11 points in the quarter.
  • The Eagles had three different players record multiple made field goals in the quarter. Jareah Branch led the way with five points in the frame.
  • Branch scored the last bucket of the half, ensuring that Eckerd's lead stayed at 13 headed into the break.
Third Quarter
  • An and-1 from Branch to begin the half, made it five consecutive points from her for the Eagles.
  • Her fellow freshman, Sheplee, would go on to score nine of the next 11 points for the Blue and Gold, making the score 51-42 after she hit the team's first three of the game with 3:32 left in the quarter
  • Through three quarters, Embry-Riddle was perfect from the free throw line, going 11-for-11.
  • ERAU forced the Tritons to shoot just .388 (7-for-18) from the field in the third quarter, including going 0-for-5 from behind the arc.
Fourth Quarter
  • Kailey Turpening would connect on Embry-Riddle's second made three of the half to begin the final quarter. That shot made the score, 55-47, with eight minutes left to play.
  • However, the next two buckets of the game were made threes by Eckerd, pushing their lead back up to 14 with 6:30 to go.
  • Sheplee recorded six of the final eight points for the Eagles, with her last points coming from the free throw line.
  • Eckerd added four made threes in the final quarter, only attempting two field goals from inside the three-point line.
INSIDE THE STATS
  • With 23 more points tonight, Eliana Sheplee continues to average 23.5 points in her eight games since returning from Christmas Break.
  • 50% of Eckerd's total field goal attempts came from three-point range. The Tritons went 11-for-29 from deep, while the Eagles focused inside, only going 2-for-11 on their three-point field goals.
  • Embry-Riddle is 13-0 when they have outrebounded their opponents, but now 1-3 when they have lost the rebounding battle. Eckerd outrebounded the Eagles, 38-29, this afternoon.
UP NEXT
The Eagles will return home to take on Florida Tech on Wednesday, January 28. That tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in the ICI Center. Embry-Riddle earned a narrow 69-63 win over the Panthers on December 31 in their first matchup of the season.
