Women’s Basketball Advances To SSC Semifinals With 84-65 Win Over Lynn

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Embry-Riddle women's basketball is moving on to the SSC semifinals on Thursday evening after a historic performance from Eliana Sheplee in their quarterfinal matchup. Just days after setting the program's single-season scoring record, Sheplee added another milestone, breaking the school record for points in a game. The redshirt freshman poured in 41 points on Tuesday night, knocking down a program-record 17 free throws and accounting for almost half of ERAU's total offense. The Eagles led the game for nearly 30 minutes, including the entire second half. The Blue and Gold outrebounded the Fighting Knights, 44-30, leading to a 24-8 advantage in second-chance points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • Eliana Sheplee did not take long to get the scoring started, connecting on a jumper on ERAU's opening possession, before Laurie Satchell took the ball coast-to-coast to put Embry-Riddle up 4-0 in the opening minute after a Lynn turnover.
  • Hannah Wentworth would connect on a pair of early threes for the Fighting Knights, but the Eagles responded with five consecutive free throws, leading 8-6 with 6:15 on the clock.
  • After falling behind 13-9, ERAU fought back with layups on three straight possessions, pulling even at 15-15.
  • The first 17 points for the Blue and Gold came from in the paint or at the free throw line, until Anye' Staton hit a jumper from the elbow, giving us a 19-19 scoreline after the opening period.
Second Quarter
  • Sheplee had eight points in the first quarter and then took complete control in the second, pouring in Embry-Riddle's first 13 points of the period. Her first field goal of the quarter came from behind the arc, putting the Eagles up 22-21.
  • A pair of quick buckets from Lynn had them back ahead 25-24, but Sheplee answered with two free throws to regain the lead. She was perfect from the line in the first half, knocking down all 12 of her attempts.
  • The first half featured a dozen lead changes and four ties, as the largest lead was five points. However, the momentum would start to change at the end of the quarter.
  • ERAU finished the half on a 12-4 run, including the final six points on layups from Alyssa Brasko, Jareah Branch, and Sheplee at the buzzer. The Eagles went into the break with a 40-35 advantage.
Third Quarter
  • Wentworth started the second half by hitting her fourth three-pointer of the game, but Kailey Turpening responded immediately with her first of three three-pointers that she made in the second half.
  • After the shot from Wentworth, the Fighting Knights would not make a field goal for the next six minutes, eventually falling behind 54-42 with 3:45 left to play in the quarter.
  • Embry-Riddle would end the quarter on a 7-2 run, finished off by a second buzzer-beater, this time from Bianca Negreiros from behind the arc, pushing Embry-Riddle's lead to 61-48 heading to the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter
  • With their season on the line, Lynn was not going down without a fight. The Fighting Knights opened the period on a 10-3 run, cutting ERAU's lead down to six points with 5:40 remaining.
  • A timely and-1 from Sheplee quickly pushed the lead back up to nine, before another three from Turpening returned the Blue and Gold's lead to double digits heading into a timeout.
  • Sheplee went on a personal 6-0 run coming out of the huddle, sealing the game with her layup that put the Eagles ahead 76-62 with only 2:42 left in the game.
  • Embry-Riddle scored the last eight points of the game, with Sheplee recording the last layup of the evening, helping her become the first player in program history to score at least 40 points in a game.
