11 Second-Half Goals Lift No. 20 Men’s Lacrosse to 15–12 Win Against RV Lander

SAVANNAH, Georgia – No. 20 Embry-Riddle men's lacrosse erased a five-goal halftime deficit to defeat RV Lander, 15-12, on Friday afternoon. Trailing 9-4 at the break, ERAU responded with six unanswered goals to take a 10-9 lead and seize control of the game. The Blue and Gold committed a season-low 11 turnovers and went 22-for-23 on clears, helping generate more than 50 shots while a trio of Eagles finished the game with a hat trick. The win was ERAU's fourth victory this season against a team that is ranked or receiving-votes as they close out non-conference play and prepare to begin SSC action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • Embry-Riddle forced a turnover on Lander's opening possession and generated four shots on its first offensive set, but each attempt narrowly missed the cage, resulting in a shot clock violation.
  • A penalty against the Eagles at the 11:49 mark gave the Bearcats an early opportunity, with the game's opening goal coming just seconds after the one-minute penalty was released.
  • Another Lander turnover, caused by Joseph Bleck, sparked an ERAU transition opportunity that led to the equalizer from Lucas Anthony just 18 seconds after the clear.
  • Lander regained the lead with a man-up goal following a 30-second offside penalty at 5:54 that was called against the Blue and Gold. The Bearcats doubled their lead after finding the back of the net again with 2:49 left in the quarter.
  • ERAU took a timeout to regroup following the goal and quickly found a response through Pierce Montes who cut the deficit in half just 49 seconds later.
  • Lander was able to find a late goal to put themselves ahead 4-2 heading into the second quarter.
Second Quarter
  • The Bearcats continued their hot start to the game by getting two goals in the first three minutes of the quarter, leading it 6-2 with 12:01 to go before halftime.
  • Montes would get his second goal of the game just over five minutes into the quarter. The freshman tied his career high with five points this afternoon.
  • Jay Kyle extended his goal streak to three games when he made it 6-4 off of an assist from Christopher Harper at the 7:35 mark.
  • Lander grabbed their second man-up goal of the half when they went up 7-4 after a technical foul for pushing against Embry-Riddle.
  • Two more goals from Lander before the half gave them a five-goal advantage heading into the break with Kyle hitting the post in one of the final shots of the period.
  • ERAU had seven total shots on goal in the first half, but improved that to 19 shots on frame in the second half. Meanwhile, Lander was limited to only eight shots on goal in the next two quarters, after they had 16 in the opening half.
Third Quarter
  • Leo Mileto got the third quarter off to a perfect start when he beat the Bearcats goalkeeper in the first 90 seconds to make the score 9-5.
  • Following a save by Reid Kerr, who had 12 saves today, Spence Hondru kept building the momentum for ERAU with a goal on their fifth shot of that possession. The Eagles suddenly trailed by just three with 11:08 still left in the period.
  • The Blue and Gold were given another lifeline after Lander was called for two simultaneous penalties. The Bearcats were able to survive the 30-second pushing penalty, but Embry-Riddle converted on the man-up opportunity before the minute had expired on the unnecessary roughness penalty, now trailing only 9-7.
  • Two freshmen combined for the next two goals as Montes completed his hat trick with 6:17 remaining in the quarter, followed by Gavin Young scoring his first goal of the game and tying the contest at 9-9.
  • The sixth consecutive goal by ERAU came from Anthony who gave the Eagles the lead for the first time this afternoon with 1:30 on the clock.
  • Matt Duarte got Lander's only goal of the quarter with five seconds left to ensure that the game was all level at 10-10 heading into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter
  • Embry-Riddle would continue the second half onslaught as Anthony scored the team's 11th goal of the game in the first 30 seconds of the quarter.
  • The Bearcats had one final response when Chase Hanson tied the game at 11 after they won the faceoff, equalizing with 13:38 remaining in the game.
  • ERAU would win each of the next three faceoffs and scored on all three of those possessions, completing the comeback and taking control of the rest of the game. The next goal would come from Tim Keefe who tied his career high with 13 shots today.
  • Montes provided back-to-back assists to Leo Mileto in the next 70 seconds, watching the Blue and Gold's lead become three goals at 14-11 with only 10 minutes remaining.
  • After already providing three assists, Harper was able to get his name on the scoresheet when he grabbed Embry-Riddle's 11th goal of the second half to make it 15-11. ERAU outscored Lander 11-2 between the third and fourth quarters, before a late consolation goal in the final 90 seconds from the Bearcats.
