2026 Men’s Lacrosse Season Comes to an End In SSC Quarterfinal With Heartbreaking 9-8 Overtime Loss

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Embry-Riddle and Saint Leo played for the second time in a week on Saturday evening, with the Lions winning 9-8 in a defensive battle. It took a golden goal overtime period to separate the Eagles and Lions after ERAU went on a 5-1 run in the second half, with neither team ever leading by more than three. It was a balanced effort for the Blue and Gold who had five players record at least two points tonight.

RECORDS:
Embry-Riddle: 7-8, (2-5, SSC)
Saint Leo: 10-5, (5-2, SSC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • Saint Leo won the opening faceoff of the game but after a pair of early saves from Reid Kerr, the Eagles were able to get on the board first through Lucas Anthony at 11:53.
  • Tristan LeBlanc equalized on the very next possession for the Lions with 10:47 remaining in the period. SLU was able to create extra opportunities by winning the first 10 faceoffs of the night, but the ERAU defense created 20 turnovers.
  • Gavin Young helped put Embry-Riddle back in front at 7:39 with an unassisted goal. Young finished his freshman season with three straight multi-goal games.
  • Two goals just 30 seconds apart for Saint Leo saw them take their first lead of the night, leading 3-2 with 6:28 still left to play in the quarter.
  • Neither team scored for the next 10 minutes as each goalie had an impressive first half. They combined for 11 saves in the first half, including six from Kerr.
Second Quarter
  • Jay Kyle leveled the game at three goals apiece after being assisted by Leo Mileto with 10:53 on the clock, who claimed the rebound after a save from Saint Leo.
  • With 9:59 remaining, Raucci reclaimed the Lions' lead, before Stellwagen scored the final goal of the half with 7:54 left.
  • ERAU had a rare man-up advantage at the end of the half but were unable to score as we headed into the break with a 5-3 scoreline. There were only two combined penalties in the game with each infraction resulting in a 30 second advantage for the Eagles.
Third Quarter
  • Aidan Knoetgen helped give the Lions their largest lead of the day, 6-3, after scoring in the first minute of the second half.
  • After opening the scoring for ERAU in the first half, Anthony struck again, this time assisted by Kyle following his earlier point.
  • It quickly became just a one-goal game as Anthony finished his hat trick with 4:18 still left in the quarter to make the scoreboard read 6-5.
  • Greg Palmer scored his first goal of the game with 3:05 remaining to give Saint Leo a two-goal lead once again. Neither team scored again in the quarter as the Eagles forced SLU into a pair of late turnovers and seven total in this period alone.
Fourth Quarter
  • The final quarter was dominated by Embry-Riddle, outshooting the Lions, 14-6. That dominance eventually paid off when Young brought the score back to 7-6 at 8:53 with an unassisted goal.
  • With less than five minutes to go, ERAU tied the game at 7-7 when Tim Keefe assisted Mileto. Keefe then scored a goal of his own at 3:27, giving the Eagles their first lead of the night.
  • After winning the faceoff, Palmer tied the game with 2:46 remaining. Neither team was able to score on their final possession of regulation, setting up a sudden death overtime period for a spot in the SSC semifinals.
Overtime
  • Bennett Hynes won the faceoff for the Blue and Gold and the Eagles took a pair of shots but they each missed the frame, eventually leading to a shot clock violation.
  • After a successful clear from the Lions, Ben Baker was found in front of the crease by Palmer, as he watched Baker score his first goal of the game and give Saint Leo a 9-8 win.
