No. 8 Women’s Lacrosse Drops SSC Semifinal At No. 2 Florida Southern, 9-5

LAKELAND, Fla. – It was a tale of two halves on Thursday afternoon in the SSC semifinal between Embry-Riddle and Florida Southern, with the Mocs prevailing with a 9-5 win. The Eagles led 5-4 at halftime after winning 10 of 11 draw controls in the first two quarters, but FSC finished the game with five consecutive goals. ERAU became the first SSC team to hold the Moccasins to less than 10 goals this season.

  • Embry-Riddle was ranked as the No. 8 team in the country in the most recent IWLCA Division II national poll (April 20).
  • The Moccasins now lead the all-time series 9-1 over the Eagles. The last win for the Blue and Gold came on April 15, 2022 when they beat FSC, 15-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • Florida Southern hit the post twice in the first two minutes of the game, but after earning possession, the Eagles drew a green card against FSC and capitalized with a woman-up goal at 12:14 from Callison Foreman.
  • Following a draw control from Eliana Enners, the midfielder assisted Ava Rogala on Embry-Riddle's next possession, putting the Blue and Gold in front 2-0 within the first five minutes.
  • After the Mocs were held scoreless for the first eight minutes of the game, Lindsey Tolliver scored a pair of goals in as many minutes to tie the game at two goals apiece with 5:03 remaining.
  • Jenna Vetter gave Florida Southern their first lead of the day at 3:43 before Riley Rivera finished the quarter with another goal for FSC, who led 4-2 at the end of the period.
Second Quarter
  • Ella-Rae Cox made a pair of saves just nine seconds apart to begin the quarter, helping turn the momentum in favor of ERAU.
  • The Eagles earned a free position shot after Aubrey Schmidt drew a foul against the Mocs, one of six total fouls called against FSC in the game. Schmidt scored to make the game, 4-3, with 7:33 before halftime.
  • Embry-Riddle was given another opportunity from eight meters out through Jordan Davis, who tied the game once again at 2:01.
  • RJ Ensor finished the half with a goal and an assist after picking up a loose ball and scoring in the final 30 seconds of the quarter, giving the Blue and Gold a 5-4 advantage heading into the break.
Third Quarter
  • Florida Southern changed goalies at halftime to Rebekah Bargeron, with the new goaltender making a pair of second-half saves to slow down the Eagles' attack.
  • Cox was in the crease for all 60 minutes for Embry-Riddle, making 10 total saves, which included four in the first four minutes of the third quarter.
  • The Mocs tied the game for the third time, 5-5, when Hanna Watson scored with 9:42 on the clock. Watson then assisted Vetter on the go-ahead goal only 41 seconds later.
  • Coming out of a timeout, Davis struck the post with her shot for ERAU, one of eight total shots that hit the post between the two teams this afternoon.
Fourth Quarter
  • FSC began the final period with possession and found the back of the net just 15 seconds later, increasing their lead to 7-5.
  • Schmidt was able to cause a turnover on the next possession for Florida Southern but after a failed clear, the Mocs led 8-5 with 12:28 remaining.
  • As ERAU looked to mount a late comeback, they forced a couple of saves from Bargeron in the final minutes along with another shot bouncing off the post, but a final goal from the Moccasins gave us our 9-5 scoreline.

INSIDE THE STATS
  • Aubrey Schmidt became the only Eagle this season with at least four caused turnovers in a game.
  • ERAU went 2-for-3 on free position shots this afternoon, continuing an efficient season where they have scored on 54.7% of those opportunities, the second best percentage in the SSC.
  • The Blue and Gold have a shooting percentage of .499 this season and a shot on goal percentage of .802.

UP NEXT
ERAU will now have to wait for the selection show for the NCAA Division II national tournament. The Eagles were ranked No. 5 in the South Region on April 22, with the NCAA Division II tournament including the top six teams in the region. The selection show will be held on Sunday, May 3rd.
