One of the most decorated and accomplished players in Embry-Riddle basketball history, DeForest Carter returned to the Eagle bench prior to the 2017-18 season as a volunteer assistant coach. Carter played for the Eagles for four seasons (2011-15), leading the Blue and Gold to 102 wins over that span. The Eagles won two Sun Conference tournament crowns, one TSC regular season title and made three trips to the NAIA II National Tournament during Carter's career.

Carter, a native of Big Cypress, Florida, became just the third Eagle ever to be a three-time All-American when he earned first team honors as a senior. Carter was named The Sun Conference Player of the Year in his senior season, as well as a three-time All-Conference performer, a member of the All-Defensive Team as a senior and was the league's Freshman of the Year in 2011-12.

What set Carter apart was his ability to have a part in evert aspect of the game, he finished his career with 1,786 points (6th all-time), 836 assists (1st all-time), 710 rebounds (8th all-time), 589 field goals (10th all-time), 494 made free throws (3rd all-time), 380 steals (1st all-time), 176 blocks (2nd all-time) and played in 135 games (4th all-time).
