Grant Maddock

Biography

On Oct. 6, 2023, Maddock was announced as the next head coach of Embry-Riddle men's and women's rowing.

In just two seasons, Maddock led the women's rowing program to an NCAA II National Championship in 2025, which was just the program's eighth year as a varsity sport and Embry-Riddle Athletics' first-ever team NCAA II title. It was a dominating 2024-25 campaign that saw the women claim state, conference and national championships while the men also won a FIRA title. The season was also filled with hardware as multiple Eagles captured some of the top honors offered by the NCAA and CRCA. Maddock was tabbed as the CRCA's DII Coach of the Year while he and assistant coaches Sami Bay and Drayton Piper were named the CRCA DII Staff of the Year. Maddock also saw his Eagles win CRCA DII Athlete of the Year honors and an NCAA Elite 90 Award.

His first season at the helm of both programs was a resounding success. On the men's side, Maddock completely shifted the focus of the program from fours to eights, which led the Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association to name ERAU the Comeback Team of the Year. Maddock led his squad to the program's second state title at the FIRA Championships and its first since 2018. In total, the men gathered seven golds, three silvers, and a bronze medal under Maddock. This included a win in the Freshman/Novice Eight at the Head of the Schuylkill and state titles in Freshman/Novice Four 'B', JV Eights, Freshman/Novice Eights, JV Fours, Doubles, and Freshman/Novice Fours.

For the women, Maddock hauled in the hardware in his first season. He became the program's first recipient of the Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year award, and picked up Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division II South Region Coach of the Year and Division II South Region Staff of the Year honors. He guided the Eagles to a third-straight Sunshine State Conference crown, a fourth consecutive FIRA state title, and an NCAA II National Championship appearance for the fourth year in a row. The Blue and Gold gathered a total of nine golds, three silvers and two bronze medals throughout the 2023-24 season. At the Head of the Schuylkill, Maddock coached his shells to wins in Freshman/Novice Fours and Club Eights. At the FIRA Championships, Maddock's squad tallied the programs first Eights title since 2021, and grabbed gold in DII Fours, JV Fours, JV Eights, Doubles, and Varsity Fours 'B'.

The Eagles remained inside the top eight in the Coaches Poll throughout the entire season, moving up to as high as second. His Eagles almost swept the weekly SSC accolades, gathering six of the seven total honors, and his Varsity Eight shell was labeled the SSC Boat of the Year.

Under Maddock, ERAU has produced five All-Americans, eight All-Conference selections, two All-Freshman/Novice honorees, three Academic All-American, four Academic All-District recipients, six Scholar Athletes, and 26 SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll inclusions.

Maddock joined Embry-Riddle rowing in the fall of 2022 as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's programs. Prior to his time at ERAU, Maddock served as the director of rowing and head men's rowing coach at Ohio State during the 2021-22 season where he oversaw and executed all functions of the men's rowing program.

During the summer of 2022, Maddock also was the program manager and head coach of the Bermuda Rowing Association for two months. He managed an eight-week international rowing camp that focused on small-boat training for youth and masters level athletes. Additionally, he coordinated all aspects of the program including coaching operations and equipment maintenance.

From February 2020 to June 2021, Maddock received his first experience as a head coach while working for Oyster Bay Community Rowing & Syosset Rowing. For 17 months, he trained athletes and oversaw programming of the youth, masters, and under-23 development teams. Maddock grew the program from 23 athletes to over 75 and assisted 10 athletes in receiving full scholarships at NCAA institutions for the fall 2021 semester.

Maddock graduated from the University of San Diego in 2019 with a master's degree in Social Innovation. He began his coaching career with the Toreros as a graduate assistant for the men's rowing program from August 2018 to May 2019.
