ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. − Holli Strompolis (Neenah, Wisc./Neenah HS) recorded 10 kills to lead Flagler College to a 3-0 (30-23, 30-21, 30-21) win over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in a Florida Sun Conference women's volleyball match Tuesday night at Flagler Gym.
Elizabeth Layfield (Gainesville, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) recorded a match-high 14 digs and added four total blocks for Flagler (15-10, 9-1 Florida Sun). Sarah Spraggins (Jacksonville, Fla./Fletcher HS) added 11 digs and Melissa Bear (Orange Park, Fla./Florida CC-Jacksonville) chimed in with seven total blocks and nine kills.
In the first game, Flagler went on a 4-0 run to breakaway from an 11-8 lead on the strength of a pair of kills from Strompolis. The Eagles would battle back to narrow the margin to 25-22 after a pair of aces by Nancy Salb (Boise, Idaho). The Lady Saints closed out the opening game scoring?five of the next six points.
Game two saw the Lady Saints break open an 8-8?tie with a 5-0 run aided by three attack errors by the Eagles. ERAU would climb back into the game with a 7-2 run of its own capped by a double block by Mia Jaramillo (Manizales, Colombia) and Jenni Nelsen (Titusville, Fla.), cutting the Flagler advantage to 17-16. The Lady Saints ran off the the last 10 of 13 points to win 30-21.
In the final game, Flagler pulled out to a 7-1 and never looked back.???
Jaramillo and Janelle Marinos (Three Rivers, Calif.) each registered 10 kills for Embry-Riddle (20-9, 6-3). Salb led the defense for the Eagles with 11 digs. Marissa Gonzales added 31 assists. Marinos, who came in hitting .267, was held to a .030 hitting percentage.
Flagler hosts the University of St. Francis from Joliet, Ill., tomorrow night at 7 p.m. Embry-Riddle hosts St. Thomas at 7 p.m. at the ICI Center Friday night.
