DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team gave a good account of themselves against the fourth-ranked Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders in non-conference action on Friday at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. The Eagles (3-7-2) scored first, but the Blue Raiders battled back to win 2-1 and improve their overall record to 13-1.
The Eagles held the Blue Raiders, who are fourth in the nation in scoring a 4.77 goals per game, scoreless over the first 45 minutes of play and allowed the visitors only three shots in that frame.
The Eagles' best scoring opportunity of the first half came in the 32nd minute off the boot of Michael Scott. Scott's long range was headed for the upper left corner of the Lindsey Wilson net, but LWC goalkeeper Pedro Caetano just managed to push the ball over the crossbar for the save.
The Blue Raiders also had a couple of chances to take the lead with just under 10 minutes left in the first half, but ERAU netminder Ian Levine got some help from Richard Genge who made a save on the line, and Levine pulled in a save of his own to keep the score knotted at zero heading into the half time break.
10 minutes into the second half, the referee saw a Lindsey Wilson foul in the penalty box as the players were set up for an Embry-Riddle corner, and awarded the Eagles a penalty kick. Joe Yoffe took the penalty and put the Eagles up 1-0.
Less than three minutes later, the Blue Raiders scored the equalizer as Ryan Stewart picked up a short clearance by the Eagles and beat Levine to the lower left corner to tie the game.
The Embry-Riddle defense did well to hold off the Lindsey Wilson attack over the next 20 minutes, but with 9:32 left on the clock, Nathaniel Jafta showed why he is the Blue Raiders' leading scorer as he finished a Carnell Learmond pass for the game-winner.
Embry-Riddle will play the remainder of its schedule on the road, beginning with a return to conference play against Savannah College of Art & Design at 7 p.m. on Oct. 17.
