OPA LOCKA, Fla. -- The Florida Memorial University men's basketball team had three players score in double-figures paced by Florida Sun Conference and National leading scorer Tramaine Stevens with 18 to help the Lions post their first season sweep of Embry-Riddle University since 1991-92 with a 67-62 decision Wednesday evening in the Robinson Athletic Center.
The Lions (11-12, 8-4 FSC) fell behind by nine points midway through the first half, but charged back to knot things up at 36-36 at the intermission. The game was close throughout with nine lead changes and 12 ties, but FMU pushed the lead to four points late on a layup as the shot clock expired by Josiah Perkins giving the Lions the 63-59 advantage with 1:29 to go.
ERAU (21-8, 6-5 FSC) was bit by costly free throw misses down the stretch as Nick Miller missed a pair a 1-and-1's at the 1:18 mark and then at the 1:05 mark. Following a Andre Beauford turnover on the other end, the Eagles looked to trim the lead to one on a Ryan Exter three-pointer from the left wing, but his shot bounced off the rim with 46 ticks left and Daniel Garcia converted 1-of-2 from the line making it a five-point game 64-59 with 29 seconds to go. Denver Cobb made 1-of-2 from the line cutting the lead to 64-60, but Stevens iced the game from the charity stripe hitting a pair.
Tyler DeBord, this week's FSC Player of the Week, did all he could to keep the Eagles in the contest with 29 points on 11-for-15 shooting from the floor with nine boards. Embry-Riddle battled foul trouble on the night with starting point guard Ryan Ridder picking up his fourth foul at the 15:20 mark of the second half forcing the Eagles to put Ryan Exter at the point. This certainly disrupted the offense for the Eagles which shot 34.6 percent in the second half, compared to 53.8 percent in the first.
ERAU closes out its regular season when they host Edward Waters College on Saturday at 8 p.m. at Daytona Beach Community College's Lemerand Center.
