WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Embry-Riddle senior center
Nick Miller thrives in the Florida Sun Conference Men's Basketball tournament. The 2005 Tournament MVP seems to pull out his best game when it comes to the season on the line and tonight was certainly no different as he recorded 23 points on 11-for-16 shooting with nine rebounds, two blocks, an assist and one steal. Unstoppable at times, he carried the team on his shoulders at times in the second half posting 15 of his 23 and had the go-ahead layup, two rebounds and a blocked shot in the final minute of the contest.
Miller helped the fourth-seeded Eagles advance to the FSC Men's Basketball Tournament Championship for the fourth consecutive year with a 75-73 win against No. 23 and top-seeded Northwood (Fla.) University. It will be a rematch of last year's finals against Florida Memorial when they face the Lions on Monday, Feb. 26th at 7 p.m. in Opa Locka, Fla. Last season, ERAU defeated Florida Memorial 68-55 in the title game in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The ERAU big men were critical to the team's success on the night, with
Tyler DeBord posting his 11th double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds and
Drew Whitaker cleaned off the glass with 13 rebounds (seven rebounds), eight points, two assists and one block.
After shooting just 33.3 percent in the first half, Northwood lit it up in the second half converting 15-of-25 from the field (60.0 percent). Marvin Owens scored 18 of his 23 points in the second half to lead the Seahawks, while Cory McJimson finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Darel Lucas aded 16 points and six assists, and Baree Ward chipped in 10 points.
The Eagles kept pace with Northwood in the shooting department with a robust 54.5 percent in the second half. The final minutes of the game were probably the most exciting portion of the game. After a pair of free-throws by McJimson tied the score at 69-69 with 1:12 on the clock, Miller made a lay-up to put the Eagles ahead, 71-69, with 59 seconds remaining. Miller had a chance to put ERAU ahead even further as he was fouled on the play, but he missed the resulting free-throw attempt, giving the Seahawks possession.
Miller preserved the Eagles two-point cushion on Northwood's ensuing possession as he blocked sophomore Baree Ward's driving lay-up attempt. The Eagles then pushed their lead to four as DeBord was able to put home a lay-up from the right side with 17 ticks on the clock.
Northwood pulled within one seconds later as Lucas hit a lunging three-point basket from the top of the arc with seven ticks on the clock to put the Seahawks down one, 73-72.
The Seahawks were then forced to foul Cobb on the Eagles next possession. Cobb pushed the ERAU lead back to three, 75-72, as he hit both of his free-throw attempts. ERAU senior Ryan Exter then fouled Ward on his way up the court to send him to the line with three seconds remaining. Ward made first attempt, then purposely missed the second to set up a last-second put-back attempt. Davis was able to get a hand on the ball, but DeBord was able to secure the rebound and the Eagles victory.
