DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The Embry-Riddle men's tennis squad dominated the battle of two top 10 teams with the fourth-ranked Eagles posting a 9-0 shutout of No. 8 Berry on Tuesday. The win boosted the Eagles' record to 11-1, while Vikings fell to 5-4 overall.
As they have done in the last three matches, the Embry-Riddle men won all three doubles points to take a 3-0 lead into singles. Top-ranked Mislav Hizak and Konstantin Lazarov topped Marcelo Peterlini and Andre Ferreira 8-3, and Carlos Bes Comeras and Istvan Bolgar claimed a win at No. 2 when Chris Jackle and Marcelo Lebrao retired with the score at 7-3. Tomoaki Yasuda and Luke Maricic extended their unbeaten streak to 11 matches with an 8-5 win over Adam Clifton and Chris Clark at No. 3.
Yasuda was the first to finish his match at No. 4 singles, improving his record to 10-1 in dual matches with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Peterlini.
Bes Comeras defeated Lebrao 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 to clinch the match, while top-ranked Hizak cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over No. 22 Jackle at the first position and Maricic put away Aguilon 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot.
Lazarov had to climb out of a first-set deficit to top Ferreira at the second spot. After falling 6-2, Lazarov took the second 6-4 and won the third set tiebreaker 10-7.
Sean Winbauer was also involved in a three-set battle. He too fell in the first set by a score of 6-4, but the sophomore fought his way back taking the second set 6-4 and holding off Clifton 10-5 in the third set to seal the shuotout.
The Eagles take a brief rest before returning to action on Friday when they host No. 12 Benedictine at 3:30 p.m.
