DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team extended its winning streak to seven matches with a 7-2 win over NCAA II Concordia (N.Y.) on Friday. The fourth-ranked Eagles, who earned their second win against a ranked NCAA II foe, improved to 8-1 on the season, while the Clippers, ranked No. 32 in the latest poll, fell to 4-2.
The Eagles started off strong winning all three doubles matches. The top-ranked duo of Mislav Hizak and Konstantin Lazarov beat Alex Grubin and Rodrigo Teixeira 8-2 at the No. 1 position, followed by Tomoaki Yasuda and Luke Maricic who notched an 8-4 victory over John Cassas and Nik Boerger at the third spot. Carlos Bes and Sean Winbauer, in his first contest at No. 2 doubles, topped Kirill Azovtsev and Vladmir Malkin 8-5.
Lazarov extended his unbeaten streak to seven matches with a 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Molet at the second position.
Yasuda registered the clincher at No. 4, defeating Azovtsev 6-3, 6-3.
One of the most anticipated match-ups was at No. 1 singles between Hizak, ranked No. 1 in the ITA's NAIA poll, and Grubin who is ranked 742 according to the Association of Tennis Professionals world ranking. Hizak held off Grubin 7-5 in the first set and then cruised to a 6-1 victory in the second for the Eagles' sixth singles win.
Bes sealed the victory at No. 3 with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 win over Teixeira.
The Clippers got wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots as Malkin edged Maricic 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (3-7), 10-3 and Ruenz downed Winbauer 6-1, 6-2.
The Eagles will be back on the court at 10 a.m. on Saturday when they host Xavier (La.) at Crotty Tennis Complex.
