MOBILE, Ala.--Overcoming a pair of rain delays and a switch to an indoor facility proved to be no obstacle for third ranked Embry-Riddle as they cruised past Vanguard (Calif.) 5-1 and into the semi-finals of the NAIA National Tournament.
Rain forced the tournament to move from the Mobile Tennis Center to the Mobile Convention center, but the move was of little consequnce to the Eagles, who ran past the Lions.
"We played really well at doubles," said head coach David Paschal. "We had to default at No. 2 doubles, but even there we were playing well. Mislav (Hizak) in particular played very well."
Hizak and Carlos Bes both won their singles matches, and Konstantin Lazarov, Istvan Bolgar, and Luke Maricic were all leading at singles when their matches were called. In addition to the singles domination, the tandems of Hizak and Lazarov as well as Bolgar and Maricic won at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Bes and Tomo Yasuda were leading at No. 2 doubles when opponents Tomas Frank and Dieter Weislmaier retired.
The Eagles will square off against No. 2 Azusa Pacific at 10 a.m. PST for a berth in the national title match.
