DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? A second-half goal by Joe Gruenwald gave the Rollins College men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over 11th-ranked Embry-Riddle in the Eagles season opener on Sunday night. Sunday's contest marked the seventh straight time that a Rollins-Embry-Riddle match was decided by just one goal.
The Tars' Dennis Chin had a scoring opportunity eight minutes into the game when his header found the back of the net. But the goal was disallowed as Chin was called offside.
One of the best scoring opportunities for the Eagles came with just under seven minutes remaining the first half when Sam Litchfield spun away from his defender leaving him with only the goalkeeper to beat. But his shot from 20 yards out went just wide of the goal keeping the score at 0-0 heading into the halftime break.
The Tars finally broke the deadlock in the 56th minute. Leslie Osei's corner kick glanced off Thomas Biddinger's head before falling to Gruenwald who slipped the ball past ERAU keeper Viktor Bergstrand for the game-winner.
After being relatively quiet for much of the match, Bergstrand's counterpart in goal, Frazer Sidall, came up big in the closing seconds of the game as he managed to get a touch on Dieter Ritz's rocket on goal, pushing the ball wide and preserving the win.
With the win Rollins improves to 2-0, while ERAU falls to 0-1.
The Eagles begin Florida Sun Conference competition on Saturday when they host fifth-ranked Webber International at the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
