Embry-Riddle Men Top Jacksonville 8-1 in Season Opener

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? The Embry-Riddle (1-0) men's tennis team opened its 2008 slate with an 8-1 win over NCAA I Jacksonville, Friday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The game was also the first of the season for the Dolphins who are 0-1 on the year. The Eagles won all three doubles points and five of six singles points to take the win.

ERAU won its first doubles point at No. 1 as Mislav Hizak and Konstantin Lazarov dispatched Jordan Ballester and Francisco Riveroll 8-2. The Embry-Riddle tandem of Carlos Bes Comeras and Jan Hoekzema downed Marcos Oliveira and Vinny Craveiro 8-6 and Tomoaki Yasuda and Istvan Bolgar closed out doubles play with an 8-3 win over Cory Garrett and Victor Vaz.

Following doubles play, ERAU head coach Dave Paschal had to adjust his lineup as Hizak was unable to participate in singles at the No. 1 position due to injury.

Luke Maricic was the first of the court in singles play after registering a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Clay Garret and the No. 6 spot.

Next off the court was Bes Comeras who scored the clincher with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Vaz at No. 2.

Hoekzema defeated Riveroll 6-2, 6-3 in his ERAU debut at No. 3, Yasuda held off Oliveira 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 at No. 4 and Bolgar bested Craviero 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot.

The Dolphins avoided the shutout at the No. 1 position as Ballester held on for a three-set 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 decision against Lazarov.

The Eagles begin a three-game road swing on Feb. 8 when they take on NCAA II Barry at 3 p.m. The Blue and Gold begins defense of its Florida Sun Conference crown at 10 a.m. on Feb. 9 against St. Thomas and close out the weekend against conference foe Northwood at 10 a.m.
