MOBILE, Ala. ? The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team opened NAIA National Tournament play with a 9-0 win over Ohio Dominican, Monday at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Complex. With the win, the Eagles improve their record to 12-7 and advanced to the second round of play where they will face No. 8 seed and Florida Sun Conference foe Savannah College of Art and Design at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
The Eagles went up 3-0 after doubles. Natasa Zoricic and Hana Im easily won their doubles match, dispatching Kristin Gillman and Emily Sampsel 8-1 at the No. 1 spot. Sara Abraúl and Marga Rico Jimenez were close behind with an 8-3 win over Ruchika Alahakoon and Amanda Hollenbaugh at the third position.
After falling behind 2-0, the No. 2 tandem of Natalie Anaya and Lindsey Kurtz rebounded to complete the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Kate Rodgers and Katie Evans.
Im was the first to finish her singles match as she did not drop a single game to Sampsel, winning 6-0, 6-0.
After dropping the first game, Abraúl won the next 12 games to clinch the win for the Blue and Gold at the No. 6 spot with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Hollenbaugh.
Kurtz downed Rodgers 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, Anaya bested Evans 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 and Zoricic defeated Gillman 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1.
The last match off the court was at the No. 5 spot between Rico Jimenez and Alahakoon. The two and a half hour match went to three sets and in the end it was Rico Jimenez who secured the win 6-4, 4-6, 10-3.
The loss ends the Panthers season at 13-5.
