DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team captured their seventh home victory in a row after defeating No. 22 Aquinas, 9-0, on Wednesday. The Eagles improve their overall record to 8-1, while the Saints fall to 5-3.
The Blue and Gold won all three doubles matches after just one hour of play. The first to step off the court were
Adrian Bayh and
Charlie Rice, who downed the Saints' John Telfer and Travis Wolf 8-1.
Peter Francis and
Istvan Bolgar, playing at No. 3 doubles, notched the second point for ERAU with a quick 8-1 win over Dan Doerrfeld and Michael Sendor. The Eagles improved to 3-0 on the day after
Jan Hoekzema and
Carlos Bes Comeras took the match at No. 1 doubles with an 8-4 decision against Jordan O'Neill and Tuan-anh Tra.
Bolgar recorded the first singles point with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory over Doerrfeld. The clincher came at the No. 5 singles spot, when Woodford-Smith topped Wolf 6-1, 6-0 to give Embry-Riddle the 5-0 lead.
Francis also walked away with a win after two short sets, defeating Telfer 6-2, 6-0. Bayh increased the Eagles' lead once again when he took the No. 2 singles match 6-2, 6-4. Hoekzema downed O'Neill 6-1, 6-3, while Rice completed the Eagles' sweep of Aquinas with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Nick Ludwig at the No. 4 position.
The Eagles will continue to enjoy home court advantage as they take on the top-ranked NCAA DII school in the nation, Barry, on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
