DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team
snapped a two-game losing skid with a 5-2 win over NCAA I Eastern Kentucky on
Monday. Battling injury and illness the Eagles still found a way to pull out
the win, improving their overall record to 7-3.
Playing according to NCAA I scoring rules, the Eagles won
their first point after sweeping all three doubles matches. Peter Francis and
Istvan Bolgar topped Parul Verma 8-4, followed by Jan Hoekzema and Alexis Huegas'
8-6 defeat of Hugo Klientovsky and Nik Schroeder. Charlie Rice and Luke Maricic
closed out the sweep with an 8-5 victory over Carlos Valdenbro and Carles Pons.
Bolgar made quick work of Pons with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4
singles and Rice held off Valdenebro 6-3, 7-6 (3) at No. 3 to put the Eagles up
3-0. Hoekzema scored the clincher at No. 1 with a three-set victory over
Klientovsky, 6-3, 6-7, 6-0.
After Francis pulled out a three-set (6-7, 6-4, 6-1) win of
his own over Schroeder at No. 2, the Colonels got two points back when Verma
held of Maricic 6-4, 6-7 (6) 7-5 and Emilio Piriz topped Alex Perez 6-1, 6-2 at
No. 6.
The Eagles' next match will be at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday against
Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
