LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 2 Embry-Riddle women's tennis team kicked off the 2013 spring season on Tuesday afternoon with a 9-0 victory at Southeastern. It was the first match of the year for both squads.
The Eagles had little trouble at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, as
Kristina Marova and Hui-l Huang took down Sadietou Mayou and Alexis Quinn at the top spot, 8-3, and
Paola Montero and
Giovanna Tomiotto handled Stephanie Dodd and Mason Bellar, 8-1, at the second position. The No. 3 doubles match was tightly contested, with Ana Gonzalez-hoy and
Meena Bennett barely getting by Kristina Wisor and Wendy Read, 9-7, completing the 3-0 doubles sweep for ERAU.
The Blue and Gold proceeded to pick up all six singles points, most of which came with relative ease. Marova breezed past Mayou at the first position, 6-0, 6-2, while Huang knocked off Wisor at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1 and Montero swept Quinn, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. Tomiotto defeated Read, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4 and
Elise Lagerstrom was victorious over Bellar at position six, 6-2, 6-2.
The No. 5 singles match was the only contest to go three sets. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Gonzalez-hoy battled back to pull out a win over Dodd, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.
Shortly after the match was completed, the NAIA released its coaches' preseason poll, which saw Embry-Riddle claim the No. 2 spot in the nation. The Eagles totaled 302 points, just 10 points behind top-ranked Auburn Montgomery.
The Eagles will return to action next week as they host NCAA II No. 17 Florida Southern on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 3:30 p.m.
