GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The 10th-ranked Embry-Riddle volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Friday at the Boneyard Brawl hosted by Georgetown College. The Eagles were swept by No. 1 Texas at Brownsville, 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-21), before falling in four sets (22-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-21) to No. 13 Bellevue.

With the losses, Embry-Riddle fell to 13-8 on the season, while UTB improved to 22-0 and Bellevue moved to 26-5.

Against the top-ranked Ocelots, Taylor Ruiz and Emily Jacobson led the team with seven kills apiece. Hannah Gray anchored the back row with a match-high 18 digs while Tamires Ferreira showed her versatility, picking up seven digs, six kills and a team-best three service aces while collecting a team-leading 26 assists.

Danica Markovic led the Ocelots with nine kills and added seven digs and two service aces. Annelies Dokter and Heather Meeuwsen led the team with 10 digs each and Xiao Yu "Jade" Guo tallied a match-high 32 assists.

The Eagles fell behind early in the first set and were never able to recover. After a Markovic kill put the Ocelots ahead, 5-4, UTB didn't trail for the rest of the frame. A kill from Dokter made it 16-9 and three straight Markovic kills pushed the margin to 23-14. An attack error by Ana Guerra sparked a 5-0 run for ERAU that included a pair of Jennifer Beatty kills, but the Ocelots came back to win the next two points, taking the set, 25-19.

The second set was the most competitive, featuring 13 ties and four lead changes. A Dokter attack error put the Blue and Gold ahead, 7-6, its first lead of the match. A Jacobson kill made it 9-7; the two-point lead would prove to be the largest lead for Embry-Riddle in the match. Back-to-back kills from Danielle Marques put UTB back in front, 13-12. A kill from Ruiz capped a 3-0 Eagle run that pushed ERAU back in front, 19-18. The Ocelots rallied back with a 7-1 run to close out the set with a 25-20 win, giving UTB a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Eagles held a 3-1 lead in the third set after a block from Ruiz and Morgan Shattuck, but Texas at Brownsville won 12 of the next 13 points, eight of which were Eagle errors, to take a commanding 13-4 lead. The Blue and Gold didn't give up, using back-to-back Ferreira service aces to close the gap to 16-12. A Ruiz service ace trimmed the deficit to 20-18 and a Ferreira kill cut the lead to a single point at 21-20. The Ocelots wouldn't allow the Eagles to draw even, winning four of the final five points to win the final set, 25-21, completing the 3-0 sweep. |
