Powell's Career-High Not Enough as No. 16 Eagles Lose to Warriors in Overtime

| By:

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Jason Powell scored a career-high 26 points, including the game-tying tip-in as time expired in regulation, but the 16th-ranked Eagles came up one point short against Webber International on Wednesday night, falling 87-86 in the ICI Center. Embry-Riddle (21-7, 8-6), was swept by the Warriors (14-11, 9-6) for the first time since the 1994-95 season and now sits in fifth-place in the league standings. Northwood clinched the regular season title with a win over Warner on Wednesday night.

Trailing for the entire 40 minutes of regulation, Powell grabbed an offensive rebound when Billy Serle missed a three-pointer with two seconds left on the clock and quickly put the ball back up and in to send the game into overtime where the Eagles led by three points on three different occassions, but were unable to put the Warriors away and when Michael Bonilla hit a trey with 1.1 seconds on the clock in the extra period, the Eagles could not find a way to send it into a second overtime before falling for just the second time in the last seven contests.

The Warriors used hot-shooting from deep and 26 Eagle turnovers (a season-high) to earn their first victory in the ICI Center since Jan. 28, 1995. Webber International scored 33 points off Embry-Riddle's miscues and were led by Brian Pace's 23 points on 9-for-15 shooting.

Pace sparked the visitors in the first half, scoring 12 points on five made buckets as the Warriors took a 38-33 lead into the break. The Blue and Gold deficit would have been worse if not for a 5-0 run to end the half thanks to a Powell three-pointer and a Rico Saldana jumper in the paint.

The Warriors increased their lead to 12 when Tyler Auerbacher hit a jumper with 14:26 remaining in the second half and the visitors held a comfortable lead for nearly the entire second period, going shot-for-shot with the Eagles until just over 60 seconds showed on the clock.

Trailing by nine with 1:12 remaining, the Blue and Gold outscored the Warriors 13-4 over the final 72 seconds, lef by Powell and DeForest Carter who combined for all 13 of the Eagles' points over that span.

Powell's tip-in at the buzzer firmly swung the momentum into the Eagles' favor, and with Pace and Gabriel Rutledge both fouled out for the Warriors, the crowd oof over 1,000 thought they might see another Embry-Riddle comback victory.

The Blue and Gold took advantage of the momentum in the opening few minutes of overtime, going up by three when Cesar Pastrana hit a pair of free throws with 3:14 left, but an Auerbacher layup and a Bonilla free throw knotted the score at 84-84.

Embry-Riddle missed two shots by got two offensive rebounds on its next possession, but a turnover gave the ball back to WIU with 67 seconds on the clock. After the Eagles forced a turnover they gave it right back to the visitors without a shot clock when the ball kicked off Carter's leg with 26 seconds left.

Bonilla milked the clock until he hoisted his only three-point attempt of the night and when it fell through with 1.1 seconds left a Warrior player left the bench in celebration, causing a technical foul call.

Powell hit both technical free throws, but the Eagles had to go the length of the floor when play resumed and Powell's throw-in was tipped by the in-bounds defender, ending the game before the Eagles could get a shot off.

Powell led all scorers with 26 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field and a 9-for-11 clip from the free throw line. Daniel Mondragon added 13 points while Carter finished with 12 points and a career-high 11 assists for the Blue and Gold.

Embry-Riddle will attempt to get back into the top four in the conference standings when they host No. 14 Ave Maria on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.
