Giovanna Tomiotto dropped just two games in singles and doubles combined against Ave Maria
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The sixth-ranked Embry-Riddle women's tennis team notched its third win of the season after defeating Ave Maria 7-2 in Sun Conference play on Thursday at Embry-Riddle's Crotty Tennis Complex. The victory was also the Eagles' third in league play and puts them at 3-4 overall and 3-0 in the conference.
Giovanna Tomiotto and
Paola Montero scored the first point for the Eagles with an 8-1 defeat of Eileen Lee and Jackie Ruiz at No. 2 doubles.
Meena Bennett and
Ana Gonzalez-Hoy rebounded from an early 3-0 deficit to rattle off eight straight games on the way to an 8-3 win over Lexi Hammerquist and Julia Sadusky on court three.
The Gyrenes earned their first point of the day at No. 1 doubles where Mary Kate Lee and Heather Esker upended
Kristina Marova and
Hui-I Huang 8-6 to make the team score 2-1 heading into doubles.
Montero made quick work of Hammerquist at the third singles spot, blanking the Ave Maria freshman 6-0, 6-0 for the Eagles' first singles point. After Huang bested Ruiz 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, Bennett clinched the ERAU victory with a 6-0, 6-1 decision against Eileen Lee on court four.
The final Eagle points came at the No. 4 position where Tomiotto topped Mary Kate Lee 6-0, 6-1 and at the top spot where Marova held off Esker 6-3, 6-0. Sadusky scored the Gyrenes' only singles point against
Elise Lagerstrom, 6-1, 6-4 as the Gyrenes fall to 0-3 on the year and 0-3 in league play.
The Eagles head to Savannah, Ga. on Saturday for a match-up against third-ranked SCAD Savannah. The contest is slated for 10 a.m.
