Women’s Tennis Falls to Valdosta State

Kristina Marova and Hui-Huang scored a doubles point for the Eagles against VSU
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team suffered its second loss of the season on Saturday, falling 8-1 to Valdosta State at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles are now 1-2 on the year, while the Blazers move to 1-0.
 
Doubles play saw Valdosta State take a 2-0 lead as Jennifer Rink and Jessica Tuggle topped the freshman duo of Ana Gonzalez and Meena Bennett at No. 3 and Laura Ubeda and Julianna Boehm held off Paola Montero and Giovanna Tomiotto at the No. 2 spot.
 
At No. 1 doubles, ERAU's fifth-ranked tandem of Kristina Marova and Hui-I Huang fell behind but broke the VSU team of Michelle Fischer and Alina Nagel to tie the score at 8-8 and force the tiebreaker. Marova and Huang had six match points and were able to hold off a surge from VSU to win the match 9-8 (9-7) and score the Eagles' only point of the afternoon.
 
The first singles match off the court was at the No. 2 position where Nagel topped Huang 6-1, 6-2. The Blazers added to their lead with straight set wins at the fourth, fifth and sixth positions, with Tuggle scoring the clincher by topping Ana Lew 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.
 
The final two singles matches to reach completion both went to three sets. On court three, Montero held off Rink 7-6 (7-4) in the first set, but Rink bounced back to take the second 6-1 and force a decisive third set. The final frame went back and forth and in the end, it was Rink who was able edge Montero 7-6 (7-5) to take the match.
 
At No. 1 singles, Marova also earned a first-set victory, topping Fischer 6-3. Fischer took the second 6-1 and wrapped up the match with a 6-4 decision in third.
 
The Eagles return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday when they travel to Winter Park to take on Rollins. The Tars are currently ranked 13th in the NCAA II poll.
