BABSON PARK, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team won its third consecutive game on Saturday afternoon, defeating Sun Conference foe Webber International 2-0 on the Warrior's home turf.
The Eagles (5-2-3, 5-1-1) remain in third place in The Sun Conference Standings with 16 points, behind SCAD Savannah (19) and Thomas (18).
The beginning of the match was not pretty for the Eagles as Webber had three shots on goal in the game's first 15 minutes compared to zero for ERAU. However, in the following minutes Embry-Riddle would hunker down defensively and open up their offensive opportunities.
In the 23
rd minute freshman
Daniel Gylfason lined up for a corner kick on the left side. Instead of sending the ball inside the box, Glyfason kicked it back to
Viktor Hafsteinsson, who corralled the ball from 25 yards out and fired it toward the top right corner of the goal and into the back of the net for the Eagles' first score of the day.
The Warriors nearly tied the game in the closing seconds of the first half when Jorge Ibañez sent a shot from the top left corner of the box to the right side of the goal. The ball looked as if it were headed for the back of the net, but ERAU senior goalkeeper
Nils Carlson made an amazing save, diving to his left to parry the shot away from the goal.
Despite Webber's inability to find the back of the net, the match was evenly played by both teams. Embry-Riddle outshot Webber 18 to 16 and both teams were dead even with six shots on goal apiece.
The Eagles' final goal of the match came on a penalty kick by Couturier in the 82
nd minute. After being brought down hard just in front of the goal, the senior lined up for the PK, faked left and sent ball just past the right of the goalkeeper to seal the deal for the Blue and Gold.
Couturier's score was his 13th of the season and the 50th of his career. He is now just five goals shy of breaking Jasmin Kadric's school record of 54 career goals. Couturier's 82
nd minute score also increased his career point total to 123, moving him past Connally Edozien for second in program history on the career points list.
The Eagles will be in action again when they host SCAD Savannah on Oct. 22 at ERAU Soccer Stadium. Embry-Riddle is currently three points behind SCAD for the top spot in the Sun Conference standings.
