DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team won two doubles and five singles matches to take a 7-2 win over No. 24 Olivet Nazarene, Friday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The seventh-ranked Eagles will take a 5-3 season record into their next match against Johns Hopkins slated for 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
The Eagles took an early 2-1 lead following doubles play. Playing together for just the first time this season,
Paola Montero and
Paula Ortiz Couder got things started for the Blue and Gold with an 8-0 shutout of Marta Janero and Lindsey Peterson at No. 3 doubles. Teaming up for the first time, Anna Götz and
Eva Vilar stumbled against Tiffany Aguirre and Aziza Butoyi, 8-2, but the top-ranked tandem of
Hui-I Huang and
Kristina Marova put the Eagles back in front with an 8-2 defeat of No. 18 Priscila Nunez and Seraphine Buchmann.
Vilar was the first off the court in singles play following her 6-2, 6-1 win over Lindsey Peterson at the No. 4 spot. Huang, ranked 17th in the ITA/NAIA national singles poll, bested 25th-ranked Nunez 6-1, 6-2 at the top spot and Marova scored the clinching point for the Eagles with a 6-1, 6-1 defeat of Buchmann on court four.
The Tigers got their second point of the afternoon when No. 27 Butoyi pulled out a 6-4, 6-3 decision against No. 20 Götz at the second position. The remaining singles matches belonged to the Eagles as Montero handled Aguirre 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 and Ortiz Couder downed Ruegsegger 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6.
