DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team (14-5) advanced to the title match of The Sun Conference Tournament with a 5-0 win over St. Thomas, Friday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. Friday's victory marks the fifth straight year that the Eagles will play in the conference tournament finale.
The Eagles' first point of the day came at No. 3 doubles where
Paula Ortiz Couder and
Eva Vilar dispatched Ashley Ahern and Lauren Lightfoot 8-2. The 22
nd-ranked duo of
Paola Montero and
Anna Götz followed with an 8-1 defeat of Monica Rekkedal and Brigitte Bustamante.
At No. 1 doubles, both sides held serve until the STU team of Tetiana Kovalska and Gabriella Bongiovanni registered a break to move ahead of
Kristina Marova and
Hui-I Huang, 5-4. The next two games saw the ERAU tandem register a hold and a break of their own to reclaim the lead, and went on to take the next two games to complete the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win.
In singles play, Montero took the first set against Ahern and was up 1-0 in the second set on court five. Next to her at the No. 4 spot, Vilar blanked Bustamante 6-0 in the first set and moved out to a 2-0 lead in the second. When rain halted play moments later, both Ahern and Bustamante opted to retire, giving the Eagles the win and a spot in Saturday's championship match.
The Eagles will play the winner of Friday's second semifinal between SCAD Savannah and Northwood.
