ORANGE BEACH, Fla. – The sixth-ranked Embry-Riddle (5-1) women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2014 season, falling to ninth-ranked William Carey, Friday at the Orange Beach Sportsplex. The Lady Crusaders got both goals from Claudia Saucedo to improve their overall record to 6-0-1, while
Isabelle Haaranen registered the only goal for the Blue and Gold.
The first half of play saw the Eagles with a slight edge in scoring chances, including a 5-3 advantage in shots and a 2-1 edge in shots on frame. The Eagles' first chance to get on the board came in the ninth minute when Haaranen managed to shake her defender and receive the ball, unmarked at the top of the 18-yard box, but her shot went high of the mark.
Katherine Ebbs found herself in a similar position six minutes later, but her attempt skidded to the left of the goal.
Saucedo was able to get a dangerous shot off in the 17th minute, but ERAU netminder
Olivia Lynch was up to the challenge as she dove to her left and parried the shot wide to keep the Lady Crusaders off the board, and both teams went into the halftime break tied at 0-0.
WCU finally broke the scoreless drought in the 71st minute when a controversial no-call allowed Saucedo to race unimpeded into the box where she slotted a low shot past Lynch for the game's first goal.
Less than seven minutes later, the Eagles got the equalizer. Playing on the right side of the pitch,
Janina Helwig got a pass off to Haaranen. Her diagonal run allowed Haaranen to shake free of her defender and the sophomore rifled home her fourth goal of the year to draw the Eagles level at 1-1
The Eagles had the better of the possession in the second half, but it was William Carey who got the go-ahead goal with four minutes left in regulation. Amidst calls from the Eagle bench for offsides, Saucedo was able to run onto a pass from Susanne Waltz, when the referee allowed the play to continue, and found the back of the net once again to secure the Lady Crusader win.
"Congratulations to Danny [Owens] and the William Carey team on today's result," ERAU Head Coach
Samantha Bohon said. "I thought we were extremely flat today and we can't afford to do that against a team like William Carey. It was not good! We didn't wake up and play until the second half and still were well below our normal level of play. There were some flashes of good performance and, despite Saucedo scoring both goals, I thought Gudrun [Johnson] was one of the few highlights today. Results aren't just going to come to us with a mediocre or sometimes inefficient effort- we have to be smart, focused, aggressive and energetic each game. It's up to us to see if we take today as a valuable learning opportunity and get better from the experience. Fortunately, we don't have to wait long to see how they respond as we play Mobile tomorrow."
The Eagles will close out their two-game road trip against Mobile at 4:30 p.m. (CDT) on Saturday.
