MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The fifth ranked Embry-Riddle women's soccer team opened up conference play in record-setting fashion Friday night, defeating the Florida Memorial University Lions 13-1 at FMU's home field at Vizcaya Park.
The Eagles improve to 6-1 on the season while the Lions drop to 1-8-1.
Friday night's matchup was the first full game the Eagles have played in 14 days as their last two games were cancelled because of rain.
"It's been two weeks since we've been able to play a game with the rain, so our team was anxious to get going tonight," said Embry-Riddle Head Coach
Samantha Bohon. "It was another great opportunity to get all of our players in and continue to build the depth of this team."
The Blue and Gold's 13 goals scored against Florida Memorial set a team record for the most goals scored in one game and the win over the Lions also set the team record for largest margin of victory. The previous marks were set in an 11-0 Eagle victory over Johnson & Wales University on Oct. 13, 2013.
ERAU's offensive onslaught began early in the game as freshman
Julia Karlernas notched her second goal of the season from just outside the box in the second minute, putting the ball over the goalkeeper's head, in the top right corner of the net. Karlenas then assisted on the Eagles' second goal, making a crisp pass to
Isabelle Haaranen who easily kicked the ball to back of the net for her fifth goal of the year.
Nine minutes later, sophomore
Nina Joergensen was fouled inside the box, and scored on the ensuing penalty kick, firing the ball to the left of Florida Memorial goalkeeper Ana Patrizzi to record her first goal as an Eagle and put ERAU up 3-0. Joergensen then fired a shot that was misplayed by the defender who accidentally kicked ball into the their own net to increase the Eagles' lead to 4-0.
ERAU would score three more times in the first half with goals from
Gabriela Casariego (31'), Andrea Skjold Frøshaug (35'), and
Aimee Kasmally (42') who headed the ball into the net off of a throw in from
Dana Robins.
In the second half, Frøshaug put on one of the best individual performances in Embry-Riddle women's soccer history. The junior scored the Eagles' first four goals of the second half (63', 70', 73', 76') to bring her number of goals scored in the match to five, tying an Eagle record. Frøshaug was assisted on her scores by
Kayla Merkel, Karlenas, Robins, and Haaranen.
Freshman
Annie Gelnaw netted the Eagles' final two goals (76', 89'), the first of which was assisted beautifully by
Kyhla Brangman who put the ball right over the defender's head, allowing the streaking Gelnaw a clear path to the goal down the middle of the pitch.
The Blue and Gold also played excellent defense in a very physical game that was laden with fouls, only allowing four shots and two shots on goal for the entire game.
Overall Embry-Riddle outshot the home team 31-4 in the game with a 21-2 advantage in shots on goal.
"I was proud of how our team handled some adverse conditions and still played with professionalism and composure," Bohon explained. "Anytime you can score 13 goals, you have to be pleased with the offensive performance. We knew tonight was important as we have a good game waiting for us vs. St. Thomas on Sunday."
Friday night's record-setting win was made even more special for Bohon as it was her 100th victory as Embry-Riddle's head coach.
"I didn't know that it was my 100th win until after the game, but this is a nice way to celebrate it," she remarked.
The Eagles will return to the pitch on Sunday at 3 p.m. for another conference match when they travel back to South Florida to take on No. 21 St. Thomas University in the NAIA Game of the Week.
