LAKELAND, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team fell 2-0 to Florida Southern on Wednesday night. Despite a scoreless first half, the Eagles were able unable to find the back of the net while the Mocs did in the second period. With the loss, ERAU goes to 2-6 on the year while FSC improves to 5-7 (3-3 SSC).
The Eagles began the game very defensive minded with the majority of the team back and behind the ball. Their best opportunities of the half came on the counter attack.
Moriba Ballah had two chances early, both on breaks. The first was a shot from the left side that went wide. The second came on a long cross from
Daniel McClintock in the 16
th minute. The ball found Ballah's head but sailed just high.
Jeff Bone had two saves in the first half including one that was a quick reflex save in the 20
th minute. He was able to shove the fast-paced shot over the top of the goal for a corner kick.
In the 26
th minute,
Ali Amiri had a look at goal as he dribbled through the midfield and sent in a shot from long range but it went wide left.
In the 40
th minute FSC had a near goal but it was whistled offside. The Mocs crossed the ball from the right side into the middle with the subsequent shot hitting the post and going in. However the player was in an offside position and it was called back.
To end the half, the Mocs took two corner kicks but nothing came of them to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
To start the second half Florida Southern was able to net a goal in the 54
th minute. The ball was passed around the upper third before Alek Cosio shot it past the outstretched arms of Bone.
The Eagles were held without a shot in the half until the 75
th minute as
Pierre Hertin ripped a shot from 25 yards out. He used the outside of his foot for a first touch shot but it whipped just wide left.
Bone kept the Eagles within striking distance with a diving save in the 77
th minute of action. This allowed the Eagle offense to push forward in the final minutes of play.
In the 88
th minute, the Mocs went on the counter attack to score. Jonathan Radvogin volleyed a cross into the back of the net to give Florida Southern the 2-0 win.
Embry-Riddle has a quick turn around as the Eagles host Saint Leo on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7pm.
