No. 17 Rollins Sprints Past @ERAUMBasketball, 85-68 as Eagles Suffer First Loss of Season

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team saw its 23-game winning streak in the ICI Center come to a swift end on Wednesday night as the NABC/Division II No. 17 Rollins Tars blitzed the host Eagles, 85-68, sending the Blue and Gold to its worst loss in nearly two seasons. The Eagles (5-1) shot just 27 percent in the first half as the Tars (8-0) connected on nine threes and made 61 percent of their attempts from the field to sprint out to a 51-25 halftime lead that the Eagles could never overcome.

The Tars' Sharif Almulla went for 33 points in the game, including 23 that came in the opening period on 8-for-11 shooting with a 5-for-6 effort from deep. Rollins, similarily to what ERAU did to Tampa on Monday, got out to a huge lead early on, going up 29-8 in the first 10 minutes before a Dalton Barnes jumper stopped a 14-0 Rollins run.

However, the Tars wouldn't cool off in the first half, taking a 38-10 lead on a Jeff Merton layup with 5:16 left in the first before Ognjen Miljkovic made a trey for the home team.

Dillon Graham closed out the scoring in the first with a triple of his own with 39 seconds left, but by then, the Tars had a 26-point cushion at 51-25 which they took into the lockerroom.

The second half didn't start much better for Embry-Riddle and the Tars took their biggest lead of the night at 32 when Mike Bedulskis made a pair of free throws to give RC a 64-32 cushion with 14 minutes left in regulation.

The Eagles started to chip away thanks in large part to Joseph Gonzalez's play off the bench, the senior scored a career-high 22 points, including 18 in the second half, but ERAU would get no closer than 18.

Gonzalez's 22 points led the Eagles, while Daniel Kiesling added 15 and Graham chipped in 12. ERAU shot just 31.5 percent for the game, the lowest shooting percentage for the Eagles since the 2013 NAIA National Tournament loss to Bethel (Ind.) where they shot just over 30 percent.

The Eagles will take a long break and try to bounce back on Dec. 16 when they play host to Johnson & Wales (Fla.) at 7 p.m. in the ICI Center.
