Walkoff and Run-Rule; No. 11 @ERAUBaseball Sweeps No. 21 Brewton-Parker, 6-5 and 13-1

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The 11th-ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles swept a doubleheader from No. 21 Brewton-Parker on Tuesday, but the two wins came in wildly different ways, The Eagles (4-1) saw an early lead evaporate in the top of the seventh inning in the opener, only to have Matt Jacobs deliver a walkoff hit to score Joshua Garcia in the bottom of the frame for a 6-5 victory over BPC (2-2). In the second game of the twin bill, the Eagles' bats came alive and were helped along by four Baron errors to run-rule the visitors, 13-1 in just five innings.

The Eagles will hit the road for the first time in 2015 this weekend as ERAU opens Sun Conference play against Webber International in Babson Park, Fla. First game of the three-game series is slated for a 6 p.m. start on Friday night while the doubleheader on Saturday will begin at 12 p.m.

Game 1 - ERAU 6, BPC 5
Tuesday's opener featured first-inning fireworks as five total runs scored in the frame, the first two off the bat of Matt Parker as the BPC first baseman hit a two-run homer over the right center field fence against Eagle starter Clayton Wagner as the Barons enjoyed an early 2-0 lead.

The cushion was short-lived however, as the home team answered in the bottom of the inning when Liam Goodall delivered a bases-loaded single to left, scoring both Jake Cavender and Garcia after the pair reached on a walk and single, respectively. After Travis Higgs struck out Jacobs for the second out, a throwing error allowed Hunter Bruehl to reach first safely as Enderson Velasquez touched home for a 3-2 ERAU lead.

Wagner worked a scoreless second inning and Garcia got a hold of a Higgs pitch in the last of the inning, taking it straight down the right field line and over the fence for a two-run homer, scoring Cavender after the Eagle infielder was hit by a pitch in the previous at-bat.

With a 5-2 lead Wagner worked around two hits in the third to keep the Eagles in front, followed by a 1-2-3 frame in the fourth. The visitors struck for one run in the fifth when a throwing error lead to a unearned run as BPC cut the lead to 5-3.

Christian Bragg, who had entered in relief in the second, kept the Eagles off the scoreboard throughout his outing and the Barons knotted the game in the sixth against Zac Grotz. Two one-out singles brought up Parker and after a wild pitch pushed both runners into scoring position, Parker singled up the middle to tie the game at 5-5. Grayson Yeomans pinch ran for Parker and stole second before stealing third, and when the throw from home to third went into the outfield, Yeomans attempted to score, but the left fielder, Goodall, threw a strike from the outfield that nailed the runner at the plate, preserving a tie.

Jack Arnold came out of the bottom of the seventh, giving up a leadoff single to Garcia, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Velasquez to move Garcia into scoring position. Arnold got Goodall to fly out in the next at-bat, but Jacobs singled down the left field line on the first pitch he saw from the BPC righty to plate Garcia and give the home team a 6-5 walkoff win.

Grotz got the win in 2.1 innings of relief while Wagner tossed 4.2 innings, surrendering three runs (two earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts.

Garcia finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored while Goodall collected two RBIs and Bruehl registered a pair of hits.

Game 2 - ERAU 13, BPC 1
The second game was all Embry-Riddle after the top of the first as the Blue and Gold exploded for 14 hits to run-rule the Barons in just five frames. Tyler Cyr was dominant on the mound for ERAU, allowing just one run on three hits while fanning seven BPC players for the first win of his Embry-Riddle career.

After BPC took a 1-0 lead in the first thanks to a Parker RBI single that scored Matt Bahnick, the home team responded, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first for a 5-1 lead. The first run came off a Velasquez bases-loaded single to center, scoring Tobias Moreno and Goodall brought in three more in the next at-bat with a bases-clearing triple to right center as ERAU went up 4-1. Jacobs registered the final RBI of the frame with a single that scored Goodall and the route was on.

Cyr threw just nine pitches in the second and the Eagles tacked on one more run when Velasquez plated Moreno with a base knock after Moreno singled to begin the frame.

Cyr recorded three outs quickly in the third and the home team effectively ended the contest with a seven-run output in the home-half of the inning. Bruehl, Dalton Hughes, Cavender, Goodall and Jacobs all recorded RBIs in the inning as the Barons' defense committed three errors to compound the damage of six Eagle hits in the frame, ending in a 13-1 advantage for Embry-Riddle after the dust settled and 13 Eagles came to the plate.

Cyr went three-up, three-down in the fourth and faced just four batters in the fifth to put the finishing touches on the victory. Cyr (1-0) threw just 67 pitches in the complete game win, allowing only four baserunners.

Goodall ended the game with four RBIs while both Velasquez and Jacobs added two RBIs to their season totals. Moreno, Cavender, Velasquez, Jacobs and Kyle Buchanan each had at least two hits for the Eagles. It also marked the first contest of the season ERAU did not commit an error.
