NAIA No. 2 Eagles Top NCAA II No. 30 Saints 6-3

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The second-ranked Embry-Riddle women's tennis team (2-0) got its second win of the season by way of a 6-3 win over NCAA II No. 30 Flagler (0-1), Thursday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The four-hour long match saw the Eagles win two of three doubles and four of six singles matches.
 
In the match at No. 1 doubles, the ERAU tandem of Hui-I Huang and Anna Gotz fell behind 3-0 to start their match, but they rallied to win eight of the next nine games to top Esther Santiago and Mary Jo Nanti 8-4 and give the Eagles the first point of the day.
 
At the third doubles spot, Giovanna Tomiotto and Ana Gonzalez Hoy were on serve until the fifth game when they overtook Krista Ingrilli and Sara Yousif, but the Flagler duo reclaimed the lead to go up 5-4. Tomiotto and Gonzalez Hoy won the next two games to go back ahead 6-5 and never relinquished the lead, winning 8-6 for the Eagles' second point of the afternoon.
 
No. 2 doubles saw Flagler's Barbara Sebkova and Thaisa Pereira jump out to a 6-1 lead over ERAU's Paula Ortiz Couder and Kathryn Bock. The Eagle pair fought its way back into contention, winning four straight games to make it 6-5. Each side earned a win in the next two games and in the end, the Flagler tandem held serve to give the Saints their first point of the day.
 
Bock was the first to register a singles point as she quickly dispatched Yousif 6-3, 6-0 at the sixth position. The next match off the court was at No. 5 where Gonzalez Hoy bested Ingrilli 6-2, 6-4 to extend the Eagle lead to 4-1.
 
The match at No. 1 singles featured NAIA No. 13 Huang against Sebkova. Thursday's match-up belonged to Huang who clinched the win for the Eagles with a decisive 6-2, 6-1 victory.
 
The last three matches all went to three sets. The teams split the matches at third and fourth singles as Pereira held off Ortiz Couder 7-5, 4-6, 10-7, while Tomiotto bested Nanti 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 10-7. The final match off the court was at the second flight between Gotz and Santiago. The first set went to Götz, 6-2, but Santiago rallied to take the next two frames 6-3, 7-5 to close out the day's play.
 
The Eagles next match will be on Tuesday when they travel to Winter Park for a 4 p.m. match against NCAA II No. 9 Rollins.
