MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The 17th-ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles scored 3 runs in the first four innings of Friday's Sun Conference series opener against Florida Memorial an route to a 13-8 victory over the Lions to secure a berth to the 2015 Sun Conference Tournament. ERAU (28-13, 15-6) pounded out 17 hits while
Tyler Cyr worked six innings in his second Friday start, allowing just one earned run on three hits. The Lions (7-37, 2-19) scored the final eight runs of the contest, but it wasn't enough as the hosts dropped their 18th straight game.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow, Saturday, April 11 at 11 a.m. in a doubleheader. The day's opener was moved up an hour because of threat of rain later in the day.
Cyr got a double play to end the bottom of the first after the Eagles went 1-2-3 in the top of the inning, and the second inning belonged to Embry-Riddle as the visitors jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back.
Enderson Velasquez started the frame with a walk, moving to third on
Joshua Garcia's double.
Matt Jacobs singled one run in before
Kyle Buchanan left the yard with a home run down the left field line, clearing the bases and giving the Eagles a 4-0 advantage.
After a walk and single with one out in the bottom of the second, Cyr got another double play to end the threat and send his team back into the dugout.
FMU starter Mike Hardison didn't last past the third as the Blue and Gold chased him from the game with five runs. Velasquez, Garcia and Jacobs strung together three straight hits after
Liam Goodall walked to give the Eagles a 6-0 lead and after a pair of strikeouts,
Jordan Brown was hit by a pitch before
Tobias Moreno doubled to left center for two RBIs, ending the day for Hardison. Jake Rosario didn't fair much better as
Jake Cavender singled up the middle for two RBIs and Goodall doubled to right center to plate Cavender and push the cushion to 11-0.
Cyr faced the minimu in the home third before ERAU tacked on two more runs in the fourth thanks to a Buchanan single and outfield error that chased home Garcia and a Brown double to left center that brought in Buchanan.
Cyr again went three-up, three-down in the fourth before an unearned Lions' run was registered in the fifth. FMU added a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly but Cyr ended the threat and his day with a pop up to short.
Florida Memorial got five runs in the seventh to extend the game and added an eighth run in the ninth, but
Dylan Demarest would allow no more as he ended the game with a ground ball to short.
Cyr improved to 6-2 with his six frame outing, allowing three hits, two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts. Garcia and Brown each collected three hits with an RBI while Buchanan drove in three with two hits and Jacobs and Velasquez also had multiple-hit games.
