DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Clay Rideout pitched his Southeastern team to an 8-2 victory on Friday night as the Fire downed Embry-Riddle at Sliwa Stadium in the series opener. The Eagles (30-14, 17-7) managed just five hits and two runs, none of either after the fourth frame as SEU (33-16, 15-9) snapped the Eagles' eight-game winning streak.
The two teams will meet up again on Saturday, April 18 at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader.
Rideout, who beat the Eagles 3-0 in The Sun Conference Tournament title game last season, held the Eagles to just five hits and two runs (one earned) in seven innings, moving to 7-1 overall with the victory, throwing 116 pitches in the process.
Tyler Cyr lasted just 2.1 innings for the Eagles, despite surrendering jsut four hits, issuing five walks and allowing three runs in the start.
A scoreless first inning for both teams sent the contest to the second and a leadoff walk by Luis Diaz came back to haunt Cyr as the SEU shortstop came around to score on a Sean Anderson RBI single to right. Cyr was able to limit the damage to one run by fanning T.J. Glessner to end the frame.
The Eagles loaded the bases in the second when a fielding error allowed all runners to be safe on a
Jordan Brown fielder's choice, but Rideout got
Ryan Maxon to groundout to end the threat and send the game to the third.
Anderson drove in two more runs in the third with a single through the left side, and after Cyr walked Ricky DeArmas to load the bases,
Clayton Wagner entered in relief and fanned the next two batters he faced to keep the deficit at 3-0.
Jake Cavender doubled and then scored in the bottom of the third to trim the lead to 3-1, but the Fire answered with a three-run fourth, all on the same play as Diaz tripled and then scored on a throwing error as SEU took a 6-1 lead.
The Eagles had their biggest threat in the home fourth when they loaded the bags with one out, but a fly ball to right resulted in a double play as Brown was cut down at the plate after a run had already come in to score earlier in the frame.
With a 6-2 lead Rideout rarely struggled in the rest of his outing, setting down six straight Eagles in the fifth and sixth before a walk started the Eagle seventh. However, another flyout double play turned by the SEU defense ended the Eagle threat in the inning.
SEU added insurance runs in the sixth and eighth and Brandon Goff allowed no hits and just one walk in the final two frames to secure the 8-2 win for Southeastern.
