DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 15th-ranked Embry-Riddle women's golf team will begin the quest the program's eighth conference crown this weekend as the team heads to Lake Worth, Fla. for the 2015 Sun Conference Women's Golf Championships. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will take place from April 18-20 and will be held at the Fountains Country Club's par 71, 6160-yard North Course.
The competition will be tough as The Sun Conference is one of the best golf conferences in the NAIA with five teams ranked in the top 25 nationally. In addition to No. 15 ERAU, the tournament field includes the top two teams in the nation in No. 1 Northwood and No. 2 SCAD Savannah, as well as No. 6 South Carolina Beaufort, No. 17 Thomas, and No. 22 Southeastern.
The Eagles finished fourth at last The Sun Conference Championships last season and had two golfers finish in the top five individually.
Hannah Robb was the Eagles' top finisher at the event as a freshman, finishing in fourth place overall with a 54-hole total of 235 (78-74-83), while
Sophie Olley also earned finished fifth overall with 239 total (76-79-84). At the conclusion of the tournament, Olley and
MacKenzie Cunningham were named to the All-Conference team.
SCAD Savannah won last year's conference championship by 14 strokes. USCB was the runner-up, while Northwood placed third.
ERAU was last in action this past weekend at the Bash at the Beach, which the team hosted at LPGA International. The Blue and Gold was the fourth place finisher at their regular season finale, finishing ahead of four of the other five Sun Conference teams that competed in the event. Olley earned her first top-10 finish of the spring at the Bash at the Beach as she tied for eighth place. Cunningham and Robb also finished in the top 20, placing 14th and 17th, respectively.
Olley leads the Eagles this season with a stroke average of 78.8 and five total top-20 finishes. Cunningham his second on the team with a season stroke average of 80.5 and four top-20 finishes, while Robb is third in both categories with an 82.2 stroke average and three top-20 finishes. Overall, the Eagles average 324.5 strokes per round.
This weekend marks the final time that the Eagles will compete in The Sun Conference tournament as the program makes its transition into NCAA II and The Sunshine State Conference. The Blue and Gold are looking to win their first conference title since 2010.
